Avs outmuscle lackluster Nords

The story of this game begins in our weekly watering-hole a week earlier. We, the Nordiques, just evaded our first loss by edging Tuck in the last minute. I, the goalie was very happy even though we were dominated by six skaters just moments ago. Chris “CJ” Johnson had been celebrating a win of his own as the Avalanche improved their record to 2-0. The conversation was positive as we both talked of our team’s wins and the prospects for the season. I bought a round of beers, perhaps one-to-many, and I was then told that I was going to get lit up and lose terribly. Of-course I talked back and guaranteed a Nordiques win! I was wrong! How many times has someone guaranteed a win and looked foolish when they couldn’t deliver. This leads me to the game at hand. A battle for first place and for bragging rights. First I will say that it was a great game. Both teams came to play. The intensity was high in the first period. The vastly improved Avalanche had acquired what they were missing last year, two solid lines of attack, and a lot of speed. Nick Baily and Christian Isaac bring added skill and speed up-front along with Travis Coe’s nifty skills and the acquisition of defensemen Dan Charette sure up an already strong core of players. The first shot on goal that I faced was a breakaway from Nick Baily. He came in alone and moved from left to right with speed. He had me beat low on my glove side. I threw out my leg and luckily the puck went off my skate and into the corner not the net. As any goalie about the first shot of the game, many times it is a forecast of how he or she is going to play. Another position that the Avalanche solidified was between the pipes. Former Holy Cross goalie, Peter Bartline was excellent in the net. He made no mistakes and was beat on a rebound at 11:05 of the first period by Mike O’Neil. Assisted by Tom Dakai and Greg Marsh. The first ended with the Nords clinging to a one-goal lead. Dan Charrette, a Boston native, skated end-to-end with speed gained the zone and walked around a Nordiques defensemen and lifted a back-hand shot over Turner’s outstretched pad. (unassisted 11;44) The Avalanche continued to carry the play with odd-man rushes until Sean McCabe scored a miraculous tip in goal from Alfonse Sorrentino and Nick Baily. (9:27). The Avalanche second period onslaught continued as Mike Hickey buried a hard pass across the crease from Charette with 6:01 remaining. It was all Avalanche until Kelly Park beat, the tough to solve Avs goalie at 2:16. Park moved across the slot and slid a puck through traffic under a screened Bartline giving the Nordiques hope as they entered the third period down 3-2. The improbable comeback seemed in order until two short-handed Avalanche goals dashed the hopes of the Nordiques.
