Refs aren't gonna take it as Nordiques hold off surging leafs 3-2
Message Sent! After calling 22 penalties in the first game the referee-in-chief Tony Gove and Carl Hatfield showed there disgust with the complaining that seems to have run rampant in the league this year. It seems like the commisioners are not the only ones who get abused on a weekly basis. We are all very fortunate to have referees in Tony, Carl and Gary that put up with us week-in and week-out. NO MORE BITCHING AFTER THE WHISTLE! Additional minors were assed to anyone who had something to say after a call as Nordiques captain Tao Smith and "mouthy" defensemen Kelly Park found out the hard way, both receiving 2 extra minutes for unsportmalike conduct. When the puck dropped, the new Maple Leafs hit the ice and out played the Nordiques in the first period. At 13:36 Mike O'Neil was called for a slashing minor. Less than a minute later, Nordique forward Greg Marsh was whistled for checking. The two-man advantage was all the Leafs needed to get on the board as Dave Fitts forced a hard shot under Turner from Sean Casavant and Kyle Manny just ten seconds later at 12:44 of the first. It was all Leafs until Dave Willis took matters into his own hands with an unassited short-handed gem at 6:20. Willis is quietly one of the best forwards in the league. "He always seems to score when it matters most" said Turner of Willis. The first ended 1-1 with Kenny Lallier making a highlight reel save on an across the crease bid. Will Meyer slid a hard pass across to linemate Ian Coates who one-timed a shot ticketed for the top corner. Lallier slide across the crease and timed his two-pad-stack at just the right time to flash his glove in acrobatic fashion. The Nordiques opened the second with an excellent pasing connection with Kelly "master of the saucer pass" Park going tape-to-tape with Jason Gaudette just 45 seconds into the period. With Mike O'Neil in the box for tripping, Kelly Park received an unsportsmanlike minor for berading the refs for what he considered a non-call. Will Meyer scored on a short-handed breakaway to extend the Nords lead to 3-1. The third period saw the Leafs scrape back into the game controlling the play for much of the third. Both goalies were excellent through the game making tough stops at both ends. Jason Loomis was "Johnny-on-the-spot" potting a rebound past Turner at 6:19 of the third. The Leafs were thinking comeback as the Nordiques clamped down. Doug Heavysides gained the zone and caught a streaking Fred Redden who had snuck behind the D. Turner butterflied across the net in the nick of time to shut the door on the last minute bid.
