It is always a beautiful thing when the last week of the season has playoff implications. All 3 games will determine the seedings for the playoffs which start in 2 weeks from today. Another David vs. Goliath this week as the top dog Storm Kings(13-3-1) host the feisty, yet last place, Maple Leafs(3-13-1).
The Storm Kings have taken all 3 games this year against the Leafs, outscoring them 19-7 in the process. Lead by one of the most dynamic lines in the UVHL, Barker-Cashman-Leroy. They have a great mix of speed, size & pure talent. Their other forwards and defense aren't too shabby either, anchored by veterans Marty "The Wizard" White, Mikey "Fizzle Pop" Fitzgerald, Tommy "The Cleanest Dirty Player in the UVHL" Scull & Artie "The Party" Stout. The Kingers can't afford a loss tonight as they are walking into the final week tied with Tuck, but with a losing record to them(1-2-0). In order to finish first in the standings this season, they MUST come away with a win, paired with a Tuck loss.
The Leafs.....oh.....the Leafs. Just like their big brother NHL club, the Maple Leafs are in a bit of turmoil. They have shown flashes of brilliance this year as well as a GRITTY, never-die attitude, especially from team captain and stalwart, Kenny "Le Blocker" Lallier. The Leafs have the potential to be giant killers behind speedy forwards Joey "The Mute" Hayes, Johnny "Boy" Thomas, Douglas "The Drill" Heavisides and Chris "Google Me" Gogan. Others like Sean "Smurfette" Casavant, are great additions to the team......if all they do is yell from the bench and never actually touch the ice. Not even during warmups.
The Leafs may be without "The Mute" tonight, who played last week with a sprained ankle, which could hurt the over under on tonight's match.
The goaltending is an interesting one......two french guys.....well, kind of French I guess. The Kinger's Dan "The Eiffel Tower" French, stands small in net, with the most unorthodox style of goaltending, this side of the Mason Dixon line, but is deceptively fast. His stand up style tends to confuse most players. Lallier has been a stud, turning away more shots this year than any other goalie, in any league, EVER. He's pretty old though, actually really old. There is whispering around the locker rooms that Lallier is so old, he can't actually see anymore, but has developed some sort of sonar / radar tracking that the Quechee Club has implanted in his head.
My prediction.......Storm Kings 8, Maple Leafs 3.....Sorry Kenny
Barker-less Storm Kings beat Maple Leafs 7-2
It is always a beautiful thing when the last week of the season has playoff implications. All 3 games will determine the seedings for the playoffs which start in 2 weeks from today. Another David vs. Goliath this week as the top dog Storm Kings(13-3-1) hosted the feisty, yet last place, Maple Leafs(3-13-1).
The Storm Kings have taken all 3 games this year against the Leafs, outscoring them 19-7 in the process. They are led by one of the most dynamic lines in the UVHL, Barker-Cashman-Leroy, which has combined for an ASTONISHING 114 points this season in 39 total games between them. Their big 3 have a great mix of speed, size & pure talent. Their other forwards and defense aren't too shabby either, anchored by veterans Marty "The Wizard" White, Mikey "Fizzle Pop" Fitzgerald, Tommy "The Cleanest Dirty Player in the UVHL" Scull & Artie "The Party" Stout.
The Storm King knew coming into this game that they couldn't afford to lose tonight as they are walking into the final week tied with Tuck, but with a losing record to them(1-2-0). In order to finish first in the standings this season, they MUST come away with a win, paired with a Tuck loss.
The Storm Kings would be with a short bench as usual, but missing superstars Robbie "Big Boy" Barker & "Tiny" Timmy Leroy is always a hard nut to swallow. They were also missing their muscle on the blue line, Tommy "Guns" Scull & Artie "The Hook" Stout, which had an interesting, and UNHEARD of affect on the Storm Kings.....which resulted in.....zero penalties on the night for the men in red.
It was also a huge night for Dan "Le Eiffel Tower" French, Ronnie Dupuis & Ricky Hughes. French was on top of his game as he only let in 2, turned away 22 shots and cut down 8 excellent scoring opportunities by the little blue swarm. Dupuis took home the game puck for a 4 point night(3g, 1a) while Hughes was SOLID on defense and chipped in 3 assists of his own.
The game started off where the Storm Kings left off last week.....totally dominating. From the initial face-off the Kings took control, peppering Lallier with 6 shots in the first 2 minutes before Ronnie "The Sprite" Dupuis took advantage of a turnover on the near boards, walked to just above the hashmarks and let a quick wrister fly, off the far post and in. BLOCKER SIDE. The game stood at a standstill for the next 10 minutes as the ice was slightly tilting towards the Maple Leafs end before the Leafs Johnny "The Giant Headed Dwarf" Thomas tied the game up with 2:10 to go. Thomas took a good pass from Jason "Crazy Legs" Loomis at his own blue line and took the Kingers Stuey "The Lanky One" Close to the far boards. Close did a nice job staying with the speedy smurf and keeping him to the outside before Thomas fired a quick snapper, about a foot off the ice, from the far faceoff dot inside the near post. The Kingers struck last with just 9 seconds to go in the period when Ricky "Captain Anger" Hughes saucered a perfect pass to "Goose" Gosselin in the slot. Gosseling pulled the puck from his forehand to his back hand tand roofed it over a fallen Lallier.
END OF THE FIRST: Storm Kings 2, Maple Leafs 1
SAVES: French(Kings) 6, Lallier(Leafs) 14
The Kingers jumped on top of the Leafs to start the 2nd period and capitalized 2:36 in on a Mike "The Fizzle" Fitzgerald one-timer from Cashman to put the Kings up 3-1. Ian Gill chipped in with his 10th of the season after Dupuis picked up a Heavisides turnover at the top of the zone, cut to his forehand and threw a spritely snapshot at Lallier who left the rebound of the WEAK shot right on the door step for Gilly to roof over Lallier as he did his best "Oh Shit" diving effort to stop it.
Frenchy made a huge save a 7:11 in the 2nd on a Fitts, Nallette & Heavisides 3 on 2. Fitts made a great drop pass to Heavy in the high slot but French came out aggressively and made the glove save at almost the hashmarks on Heavisides. The Leafs cut the lead in half with 4:59 remaining in the second as Heavisides aimed to redeem himself, picking up a loose puck in the high slot, pulled it to his forehand heading towards the far boards and let a blistering shot go, beating Frenchy glove side low to make it 4-2.
Dupuis got his 2nd of the night and 11th of the season to put the Kings on top a healthy 5-2 after taking a nice pass off the near boards from Marty "Old as dirt" White. Dupuis walked to the near faceoff dot and fired a quick snapper through the defenseman, up and under the crossbar, blocker side.
END OF THE 2ND PERIOD: Storm Kings 5, Maple Leafs 2
SAVES: French(Kings) 14, Lallier(Leafs) 25
The Maple Leafs came into the 3rd period flying and actually controlled the play for a good portion of the period, and it it wasn't for some bad bounces & the great goaltending of Dan French, the 3rd period could changed the momentum of this game. The Storm Kings finally broke through on Lallier halfway through the third on a great pass that Cashman feathered through the crease from the near corner to a waiting Marty White on the back door. That goal was the back-breaker for the Maple Leafs, putting them down 6-2 and taking the wind out of their sails and the bounce of of their smurf-like little steps in the 3rd period. The Kinger's Dupuis finished off his excellent night with the hat trick when Lallier went to cover up his weak shot and accidentally pushed the puck through his legs and into the net with 6:36 to go.
