Avs come from behind down 2 to beat Storm Kings on 2/13:
Can any team in the UVHL win without its stars in the lineup? Well, the Leafs have, but they don't really have any stars. In this game the Storm Kings had a 2-0 lead without Hogg or Coakley, but it was the star that was there (on the other team) that proved to be their demise. The majority of this scoresheet is full with penalties, not goals, so I hope the readers are not bored with the chippy details...
To start off the first period between these two teams tied for third place, Storm Kings Tenacious D # 3 Tom Scull went to the box for holding at 13:46. Then it was # 3 for the Avs, Brian Walsh, who got sent for a hook at 6:55. The other Tenacious D Artie Stout also took a hooking call at 5:58, and then teammate Mike Fitzgerald was nabbed for holding at 2:53. No goals were scored during the first, and the PP attempts were rejected by both goaltenders.
In the second Stout went for another hook at 13:50, and that was it for the penalty box parade for a while at least. Play continued evenly back and forth, and the Storm Kings were looking good without Hogg and Coakley and were containing Bayley and Isaac well. Fitzgerald scored the first goal of the grudge match more than halfway through the game at 4:41, assisted by Storm Kings veteran defenseman Stu Close. Fitzy then increased the lead to 2-0 continuing his hot streak with another goal at 1:05 from linemate Greg Gosselin. Bayley would not allow his team to continue down 2 goals, and he reduced the lead back to a 1 goal deficit finishing off a nice passing play from linemates Isaac and Sorrentino with only 40 seconds to go in the frame. Late in the period matching minors went to Kings veteran F Marty White for hooking, and to Bayley for holding with 0:11 on the clock.
It was 2-1 Storm Kings to start the third, and I bet if you asked them to take those odds against the Avs without Coakley and Hogg that they would have taken them in a heartbeat. Walsh took a slashing call at 13:27 and returned to the Avs box, and then John Murphy ruined the Kings PP by a holding penalty at 13:09. But, it came with a bonus because Avs captain Mike Hickey (now that his lovely wife and 3 kids had already gone home after staying to watch the first two periods) was being called simultaneously for interference and he voiced his objections to the call. Uh, huh, thats right smart reader, the Kings PP was still in force for another 1:42. Yep, you can guess what happened next...Chippy Hickey got an extra two for unsportsmanlike, and then continued to lament out loud within earshot of the refs and was forced to sit for a 10 minute misconduct. Nice job! Way to lead by example, eh! Well, I guess it worked and fired up Dr. McSelfish because Bayley took matters into his own hands yet again and scored the unassisted GTG while shorthanded at 12:17 with Walsh still in the box! Momentum had swung towards the Avs, and the Kings tried to hold on, but Stout went for a rough at 10:36 and the big man from the point scored yet another GWG for the Avs at 9:05, this time on the PP, as Dan Charette made it 3-2 off a feed from Chris Johnson. Matching roughing minors were doled out to Kings D Andy Weber and Avs F Christian Isaac at 8:19, and I must assume that they sat in the box and felt much shame (methinks not, eh). The Kings tried to get back into it, but it was the Avs that continued on the comeback trail and Bayley sealed the deal with the insurance goal to complete the Hat Trick at 0:52, scoring 3 goals in less than 15 minutes to lead his team to victory from behind late in the game once again. Isaac took an interference minor with a mere 1:12 to go, but it was already too late, the game was over.
