Smoke Eaters get lucky against Nords to force OT on 4/6.
This was the best game all Mud season for both teams. All the key players were there and there was at least 2 full lines per team, there was great goaltending, defense, offense and no excuses. The 3 fans were even treated to an awesome OT shootout! The Nordiques had been struggling with on ice chemistry and team play as the new mix of players and inconsistent and ever changing flow of official subs made their way into the line up with the Nords regulars. However, the same can be said for the Smoke Eaters to some degree, but it really has been their usual cast of regulars on the line up without any new faces to integrate. In any case, both squads were ready to play in this one, and they left it all on the ice! The only goal of the first came because of Tom Scull's hooking minor at 12:41 and the Nords super center Dan Ammel made the Smoke Eaters pay for the infraction at 12:11 on the PP from Tom Dakai at the point. The rest of the period saw both teams get chances, both goalies make fantastic saves to keep their teams in it, and also saw great defensive plays in both ends to thwart dangerous offensive chances. The Nords killed off a minor to Al Sorrentino at 9:20 for high sticking. Early in the second Scully made up for his infraction by pouncing on a turnover that he blasted past JT in the Nords net for an unassisted goal at 14:51, only 9 seconds into the period. The Smoke Eaters went up 2-1 on Sean Coakley's unassisted effort at 7:53. In truth, I think the refs are missing a TON of assists. I'm not buying three unassisted goals in a row, and I'm not buying 5 single assists on the other 5 goals that were scored either. The Ref-In-Chief will be made aware of the situation and punishment will be meted out to the lazy refs that are not earning their premuim pay in the UVHL!!! In any case, all we can do is go by the game sheets... Dan Ammel scored his second of the game at 5:49 to answer Coakley's unasssited goal with one of his own to tie the game at 2-2. Jason Loomis was subbing in on the SE's and was called for roughing at 2:57 of the second. The Nords PP was en fuego and they scored their second PPG of the game at 2:04 when Kelly Park solved Frenchy from a D-2-D point pass by Doug Troy, and the Nords went ahead 3-2. In the third the ever dangerous line of Sinclair-Coakley-Cashman kept pressing for a goal, and Dean Cashman tied it up at 6:54 from Coakley. Dan Ammel continued his superman impression and carried his team scoring a goal in each period, and completed the Hat Trick at 5:29 assisted by Kelly Park with his second point of the game. Things looked good for the Nords leading 4-3 and they seemed to have the edge, even ever so slightly, for most of the game. However, Kelly Park's stick check attempt on Ryan Sinclair's wrister from the high slot found its way right under the crossbar over JT's left shoulder, and that tied the game at 4-4. Sinclair's goal at 4:12 was assisted by Coakley, his third point of the game.
Overtime: In the extra frame three shooters were chosen for each team. The Smoke Eaters sent Coakley, Sinclair and Cashman (weird, huh?). The Nords sent Park, Ammel, and Mike O'Neil who had played a strong game creating chances and getting shots but hadn't been credited for any points. JT got revenge on Coakley for a recent shootout goal shutting down Coakley's first Smoke Eater attempt. Kelly Park continued his ridiculous debacle of shootouts and bungled another one as he went down the ice on Frenchy. Redemption would not come on this day for Park. Ryan Sinclair followed Coakley's path weaving into JT's zone from the right side and found the net to give the SE's the edge. Dan Ammel had a chance to make it a 4 goal game and lock up POW honors, but Frenchy shut him down, too, but at least Ammel got off a decent attempt, unlike Park. Dean Cashman took his shot with memories of his GWG against JT in net for Potter recently, but JT's Revenge was sweet as he sent Cashman back to the bench hanging his head. It was all up to Mike O'Neil to force a sudden death shootout, and he weaved and bobbed and kneeled and bobbed and weaved and bobbed some more and he....hit the post! Frenchy defeated JT in consecutive shootout games, who woulda thunk it?
