8 Tuck skaters blank full Leaf line-up on Nov. 7th
Excitement was in the air as these two teams took the Union Arena ice for the late, late UVHL game after the 42 attempt shootout that had just transpired. For various reasons Tuck was without their two skilled snipers and yet again showed up with less than 9 skaters for a very competitive game. Is Tuck actually better with only 1 and a half lines? Don't speak too soon, because I think they'll be lethal with a full squad in the playoffs, and they are definitely the very best UVHL team on paper this 2006-07 season with a mere 3 high school players and the rest D3 and D1 college players (plus they even have practices and tourneys, too!). The Leafs were looking at their best chance pre-game for a win vs. Tuck, but only on paper, and we all know how that pans out. A full Leaf squad with a hot goalie was looking to take down a depleted Tuck lineup with a rookie goalie in net, but it just didn't happen that way. Tuck scored on the PP with Leaf Captain Sean Casavant in the box shaking his head after getting called for holding at 10:07, and Tuck's PP marker found a hole past Lallier at 9:05 on Jamie Greenthal's shot fed by Peter Hanbury and co-captain Alek Roomet. Tuck scored at 12:38 of teh second on Hanbury's goal assisted by co-captain Pat Fox, who is still thriving without his brother, former Tuck captain from last season John Fox weighing him down on the same line and belittling his little brother with emotional baggage from their childhood. Pat has stepped out of the shadow of his older sibling and has assumed the Tuck co-captaincy and has come into his own! (Still kidding there, Johnny - hope Chicago is treating you well eh! Hope to see you in a UVHL game before the season is over! I'll keep my head up...). Tuck went up 3-0 at 7:39 on Ben Kennedy's unassisted goal. Leaf F/D Ian Stevens, Mr. Stogie himself, went to the box at 5:39 for interference, but the Leafs shut down Tuck's PP. Trevor Martin got the extra, extra insurance goal at 7:45 of the third from Michelle Labbe. What else is there to say about this game? I'm happy for Tuck since they continue to win without a full team and wil be simply dangerous in the playoffs, and I'm pining for the Leafs to really come together on the ice because they are a great group of players (and people) and they are even better than last year, but still haven't figured their team game out. A practice or two, maybe? How about the same 14 skaters every week win or lose, and forget the subs? I dunno...I just want every UVHL team to do well and develop good team dynamics on and off the ice, have good cohesion as a group and have fun together, because it sucks to lose. Not that you have to win every game to have fun and a positive experience, but is sure is better if you are at least threatening in every game. What I can say this year is that there are no longer any nights off in the UVHL. EVERY team is improved, and yes, some are more improved than others. I don't have all the answers...just a love for hockey, and that just has to be enough every time I hit the ice.
