Smoke Eaters fool the Leafs 7-2 with only 7 skaters on 4/1!
Frenchy earned a Player of the Week nod for his outstanding performance in net for the Smoke Eaters allowing only 2 goals against with only 7 skaters in front of him against the Leafs on April 1st, and no, it wasn't a joke or April Fool. With their offense clearly focused on Dean Cashman and Sean Coakley the SE's had to defend against the Leafs' aggressive forecheck and puck pursuit and nearly full roster. Coakley started the scoring at 8:39 of the first fed by Jay Campion and Dean Cashman. Coakley scored again from Campion at 7:15, and 11 seconds later Coakley set up Cashman to put the Eaters up 3-0 before the period was barely half over. With only 5 seconds to go in the first Dave Riley cut the lead to 2 scoring a goal assisted by Fred Redden. Cashman opened up the second period scoring with a goal at 12:18 from Tom Scull and Singe Arnold. Scully went to the box at 9:39 for tripping but the 6-man roster remaining killed it off. At one point, I think it was in the second, but Greg Spitz who was subbing in for the depleted Smoke Eaters deflected a puck into his own chin and went off for repairs with the Commish (but had to promise he'd go directly to the ER for stitches immediately after the game), and soon came back to rejoin his teammates because he is a hockey player, dammit! There was over 11 minutes of scoreless hockey in the second and the teams traded chances, and both goalies did snow angels and yoga to keep their teams in it, but it was the Eaters who scored next at 0:38 on Scully's goal assisted by Cashman to go up 5-1 and put it out of reach. The Leafs were taken aback, so much so that the SE's took them by surprise 35 seconds later to end the second on # 16's goal (I think it was Greg Spitz or Bill Morrison, sorry but the game sheet isn't complete) from Scully with his third point of the second period. In the third it was Coakley at 11:26 from Cashman and # 16 to end the Smoke Eater's onslaught at 7 goals for. The Leafs scored at 7:53 on John Thomas' goal from Justin Wing and Doug Heavisides, and the Leafs had a chance to score another one for pride after # 16 went to the box for interference at 5:11 but Frenchy shut them down.
