Potter gets "Smoked" in OT shootout on 3/30.

This was the Will Meyer and Sean Coakley show, with an honorable mention to Dean Cashman. When I got home and looked at the game sheets, after watching the exciting shootout in person and a Heap'O Wings at Murphy's post game, I was blinded by the plethora of # 11's on the game sheet. Both Meyer and Coakley sport # 11 for their respective teams, and it was ridiculous to see that many number elevens on one page. Potter had their entire line-up minus goaltender Jake Obar who was out of town, and JT filled the Potter net doung double duty in Obar's absence. The Smoke Eaters showed up with their best line-up thus far this season, and their roster looked significantly like the UVHL's Storm Kings with Andy Weber, Rick Hughes, Dean Cashman, Sean Coakley and Ryan Sinclair wearing red and white along with the usual cast of veterans, and gave Potter their best competition yet of this spring's version of the UVHL's Mud League. The scoring started at 11:29 with the first of many Coakley goals from Cashman and Sinclair. Coakley made it two in a row at 10:44 from Cashman, but Gino Riffle answered to make it 2-1 with an unassisted goal at 7:43. At 1:44 of the first Sinclair took a holding minor, but on the PK Smoke Eater defenseman Rick Hughes was the victim of a fluke shot that got away from Potter defender Jason Rouillard. Witnesses told me that Rouillard took a one-timer clearing shot on a puck that started to roll just as it was coming into his stick. The puck went out of control and not in the direction that Rouillard intended, and it swerved into Hughes head high and caught him on the right side of the helmet at his right ear with 0:54 left in the first. Hughes went down bleeding and in pain, and everything stopped as his friends and teammates were concerned. Rick was carted off to the sidelines and there was a considerable delay as Rick was tended to by Dr. Ed Sheehan of the Leafs and the ambulance was called. Rick went to the hospital for four stitches and is okay, and we expect him back in uniform again this season. After the delay the clock had to be changed to 35 minutes running time once the last 54 seconds of the first were completed since we were not the last group of the night and had to stay on time. In the second half Will Meyer scored his first goal with 29:55 left from Justin Barwood and Gino Riffle to tie the game at 2-2. Coakley answered at 24:50 from Cashman with his third first assist of the night on a Coakley goal, and from Ryan Sinclair. Meyer didn't like it and he scored an unassisted goal at 22:10 to make it 3-3. Potter forward Gary Smith took an hooking minor at 20:30, but Potter killed it off. Josh Obar went to the box shortly thereafter at 18:15 for holding and Coakley scored on the PP from Sinclair and Cashman to put the Eaters up 4-3. Coakley scored his fifth goal of regulation, all five Smoke Eaters goals by the way, and extended the lead to 5-3 at 13:15 assisted by guess who, that's right. Dean Cashman. Meyer was pissed and scored another patented unassisted goal off some hard work and speed at 11:30 to cut the Eaters lead to one. Meyer scored his fourth goal of regulation at 7:53 from barwood and Anthony Shaw to tie the game and send it to an overtime shotout for the extra point. Potter killed off an interference call to Matt Potter at 5:00 to seal the deal for OT.

Overtime Shootout!: Both goalies were ready with Frenchy in net for the Smoke Eaters and JT in the net for Potter. Gino Riffle started hockey's most exciting play going in on Frenchy and scoring on a low shot to put Potter up 1-0 in the extra frame. Sean Coakley went down to JT's end and beat him in close on a blocker side shot that only another goalie could score. Kevin Guilbault took his shot against Frenchy and was shut down. Ryan Sinclair came in on JT from the right side and almost fooled him with a low glove side shot, but JT grabbed it and showed it to him. The shootout was tied 1-1 withone shooter to go on each team. Fans were going crazy and electricity was in the air, as was Kelly Park's annoying voice telling each shooter that they "SUCKED" as they skated in on the goalies. Will Meyer was the last shooter for Potter, but Frenchy denied Meyer his fifth goal of the game and laft it all up to Dean Cashman to win it. Cashman also approached JT's net from the right side and made a money shot right under the crossbar over JT's glove for the game winner. Man, was it exciting!
