Whalers & Nordiques Round 3
| ODDS: | Whalers By 1 |
| OVER/UNDER: | 9 Goals |
After the Nordiques thrashed the Whalers back in October 6-3, they were the heavy favorites last month and expected to beat the Whalers again by a score of 6-4. That didn't happen. The Whalers did their homework and absolutely dominated the Nordiques in a 7-4 barn burner.
In that game Scotty "Sugar" Shaw(2g, 2a) and Jimmy "World Beater" Kerrigan contributed a trio of third period goals that broke a 4-4 tie and added a pair of insurance goals. Those two were awesome and were both named stars of the game.
The Nordiques were terrible, from net to defense and most of their offense. Their only saving grace was Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee who made Kenny "Le Petit Gran" his bitch with a couple of breakaways. Lallier was excellent in the third and received a well earned win.
The Nordiques sit at 4-3-0 while the Whalers are 2-5-0, but don't let the records fool you. The Nordiques have had the weakest schedule possible this season, playing Dead River 3 times and the Gamblers & Tuck only once each. The Whalers have had the tough task of facing the Gamblers 3 times and Dead River only once. The Whalers are clearly weather tested now, facing the tougher opponents while the Nords seem to be soft.
This is an interesting one to call. The Whalers have an explosive offense with Shaw, Kerrigan, Redpath & Zanleoni. The only issue is that they never know who is actually going to show up. The Nordique's attack starts with McGee and the team only seems to be as good as McGee is that night. They need bigger contributions from their other players to compete.
In net the Nordiques have a slight advantage with Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner over the elder statesman Lallier. Turner let in a couple of softies last time they faced off but should have had a shutout against DR in their last game but the bid was ended on a goal that was kicked in. Turner needs to be at his best for this one.
Whalers had more energy and desire in the last meeting and Vegas recognizes that and have set their odds with the Whalers as the favorite. Whalers take this one 5-4.
Nordiques Can't Solve Whalers Again, Lose 5-3.
The Whalers do it again, knocking down the Nordiques for the second time this year. This time it was by a score of 5-3. A couple of lucky bounces and some lackadaisical play led to a pair of late goals for the Whalers to put them ahead.
The Whaler\'s Kenny \"The Tower of Power\" Lallier was superb, stopping 23 of 26 while the Nordique\'s Johnny \"Temper Tantrum\" Turner stopped 39 on the night.
Five different goal scorers were used by the Whalers in the win but only two players had more than a single point. One of those players was Chucky \"Lurch\" Gaede who was credited for the game winner and insurance goal assist. Gaede was great tonight as he played solid defensively and contributed offensively with his first goal of the season.
This game was actually played without a scorekeeper who was a no-show. So they played three 22 minute periods with running time.
The Nordique\'s went up late in the first half on a great individual effort by Eric \"Special K\" Krivitzy and things looked good for the Nordiques. Tommy \"The Shitter\" Crapser had a sweet goal off of a point shot that went off the end boards, behind the net and to Crapser on the goal line. Crapser then ROOFED it over Turner who was trying to get back across the net. Kelly \"Bambi on Ice\" Park scored a highlight reel PP goal, as he cut up the middle, around a defenseman with his deceptively slow speed and roofed a backhander over Lallier as he fell to his knees and crashed into the end boards. Some would say that the only reason Park was able to get the puck off the ice is because he was falling, and they\'re probably right.
Dillan \"Fierce\" Pierce got his own rebound on another great individual effort to tie the game with 2:02 left in the second.
Gary \"The Pearl\" LaPerle put the Whalers up 3-2 early in the third period firing a puck off Shawn \"McDefense\" McDermott in the slot. Krivitzky got his 2nd of the night as he squeeked another one through Lallier\'s 5-hole just 1:39 after LaPerle\'s goal and all was good for 12 minutes before Gaede struck with a point shot that Jordy McGee tried to stop with his stick, tipping the puck up in the air and over Turner. Just to keep things in perspective, McGee also missed an open net just 20 seconds earlier when Pierce \"Mayhem\" Mahew set him up all alone in front...soooooooo...McGee really was a -2 on that shift. Ryan \"The Boss\" Foss got his first of the year as Turner left a Gaede point shot in the slot and Foss beat Park to the loose puck to jam it home for the 2 goal lead.
The Whalers hung tough like the New Kids and the Nordiques fell to 4-4-0 on the season while the Whale improved to 3-5-0.
