Whalen Cup Rematch!
| ODDS: | EVEN |
| OVER/UNDER: | 7 goals |
After the Brewers throttled the Nordiques last season to win the Whalen Cup, they get a crack at redemption in week one. A win wouldn't necessarily make up for losing in the championship game, and wouldn't mean jack shit considering the Brewers have "graduated" two of their stars in Doctors Nick "The Stick" Bayley & Pete "The Meat" Bartline who have moved back to Canada to pursue a domestic partnership.
The Nordiques have also parted ways with Tao Smith, Dave Willis, Kevin Dwyer & Mike O'Neil. The Nord's will also be without commissioner & defensive stalwart Shawn "McDefense" McDermott who is battling some health issues, but will hopefully be dawning the puke green & yellow once again.
Two different teams, with a loaded past. The Brew Crew still has last year's PIMs leader Garren "Captain Hook" Poirier roaming their blue line and taking penalties at liberty alongside "Tons of Fun" Dan Charette who sells Ben & Jerry's out of his hockey bag in between shifts. In net, Matty Crowson takes over for Bartline and should fill in just fine. Rumor has it that they have hired some big guns to help with the transition.
The Nordiques, the oldest team in the league, are transitioning with some youth. They have brought on Pierce Mayhew and Brian Racicot to fill their holes and welcoming back Andy Puchilak into the fold.
This game is a toss up, there are too many variables that have changed to even make an educated guess. I'll call it EVEN with an over under of 7 goals.
Nordiques Get Revenge, Thump Brewers 10-4
After getting beat up by the Brewers 5-3 in the championship game last season, the new look Nordiques wanted to enact a bit of revenge against the new-look Brewers. Both teams have lost some key components from last season, but the bottom line is the Brewers won the big game, and no regular season win for the Nordiques will ever take that away.
The Nordiques started the season without one of their most important players, League Founder & Defensive Gem Shawn \"McDefense\" McDermott who is battling Kidney Cancer. The Nords may have been energized by their fallen team mate as they dedicated the game to Shawn in the locker room.
This was actually a close game in the first, with both teams controlling the play and getting quality scoring chances. The Nordique\'s Johnny \"Temper Tantrum\" Turner & the Brewer\'s Greg \"First Period\" Feiden made big saves in the first to keep their teams in it. Feiden was filling in net for the Brewers as their starting goaltender, Matty \"The Eagle\" Crowson was out of town at a cross-dressers convention in San Francisco.
The first period saw the Nordiques jump out to a 2-0 lead late behind an Ian \"The Grin\" Coates tally with 5:35 followed by a Brian \"The Mute\" Racicot rebound goal with 3 minutes to go. Both goals were assisted by Pierce Mayhew who also picked up two goals in his first game in the UVHL. Brian Smith cut the lead in half with 10 seconds to go as he took a backdoor pass from Brock \"Beefcake\" Barton on a well played two on one.
END OF THE FIRST: Nordiques 2, Brewers 1
It may have been one of the following or both, but it seemed as though the Nordiques turned it up a notch in the 2nd period and/or the Brewers started to become fatigued. Regardless of the reasons, the Nordiques added 3 more goals in the period behind their new line MMR line of Mayhew, Jordy McGee & Racicot. All 3 players scored and with McGee picking up 2 assists & Racicot also getting a helper.
The Brew Crew cut the lead down to 5-2 again late in a period when Chris Dubin split the defense with a pass to Aarron \"Man Child\" Mancuso who broke in all alone on Turner and made Turner his bitch with a quick move to his backhand.
END OF THE SECOND: Nordiques 5, Brewers 2
The 3rd period saw the game double in score from 5-2 to 10-4. The Nordiques poured it on with a pair of goals from Greg \"The Butcher of Norwich\" Marsh & Kelly \"First Gear\" Park. Marsh\'s 2nd tally was a 60 foot slapshot inside the far post on Feiden while Park may have reached 2nd gear on a nice breakaway pass from Coates where he completely mishandled the puck only to see it slide into the net. \"I\'m a goal scorer said Park, that\'s my new move, make the goalie think I lose the puck, but that is the ultimate sign of a puck handling genius!\" Another highlight of the third period was a one on one battle between boss & employee. The Nordique\'s Pierce Mayhew works under the Brewer\'s Brock Barton at DHMC counting beans. Barton, a defenseman, was stripped at his own blueline only to see Pierce walk in on Feiden all alone to put the Nord\'s up 9-3. The Brewers tallied two goals against Turner from Billy \"The Kid\" Fletcher & Jason Yehle.
END OF REGULATION: Nordiques 10, Brewers 4
The bottom line, the Nordiques had something to prove. They may have been powered by the loss of team mate McDermott, their youth could also be a major factor, OR the Brewers could have been suffering from dreaded WHALEN CUP HANGOVER.
Turner was good enough for the win, and the Nord\'s line of Mayhew-McGee-Racicot was nothing short of brilliant as they potted 5 goals & 12 points between them.

 | Brew Crew! Sep 22nd, 2010 03:40 PM
I wish I could say that I've been working out all summer in preparation for the season....it's gonna be ugly. Regardless, I can't wait.
It'll be interesting to see the revamped Brew Crew. Rumor has it they've brought in some youth.

The new "dinks" looked good. Great transition game, you won the neutral zone and as usual JT was stellar in net, and got his pipes to help him out. We looked rusty and lost all the loose puck battles and were muscled around but show good signs with some great guys for additions, in the locker room and out. We took a beating and deserved it. .500 regular season = Whalen cup. hkydoc WRJ, VT

Thanks for the dedication, Boys! That means a lot. Hopefully I'll be ready by mid-season. GO NORDS!
Did you know that MMR stands for measles-mumps-rubella? They are officially the VIRAL LINE, or the DEADLY VIRUS, or maybe just INFECTION...
Funny line about Crowson in San Fran, Parky! Did you really get to second gear?
