Bottom Dwellers....Dead River @ Nordiques
| ODDS: | Nordiques By 1 Goal |
| OVER/UNDER: | 7 Goals |
The offensively challenged Nordiques host the last placed Dead River squad in the late game tonight. The Nordiques who were already without injured offensive leader Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee will also be missing Kelly "Plus Minus Nightmare" Park after a one week suspension for fighting last week. In all reality, missing Park's horrific defensive play and awful offensive skills may actually work out best for the Nordiques who have struggled to score goals and prevent them over the last 6 weeks.
Dead River is a giant question mark. Nobody knows who will be playing for them, what alternates they will be pulling in, or if their goaltender Greg "Bin Laden" Feiden will be mentally stable for the game.
Dead River's short bench has been the bane of their season so far. Getting off to a great start last week against the Whalers, they brought a 4-4 tie into the third period before the wheels fell off and they surrendered 5 straight goals for the 9-4 loss.
The Nords need to find some offense, but not at the expense of giving up defense. This could be a rough game for the Nordiques who have had trouble with the feisty Dead Riverians.
Nordiques win it, 4-3
Nordiques Squeak Past Dead River 3-2
The offensively troubled Nordiques and Dead River teams battled to the finish in one of the lowest scoring games of the season. The Nordiques, without offensive leader Jordan McGee have been transformed from an offensively potent team to a dismally sluggish offensive squad. Scoring just 9 goals in their last 4 games after scoring 40 goals in the first 7 games of the season, the Nords are in desperate need of a spark.
Dead River has scored a league low of 37 goals in 14 games this season and their struggles continued tonight with only two goals. They did end up playing a solid defensive game, but that was matched by the Nordiques as they try to regain their team game and defense first mentality.
Both netminders were on their game tonight with the Nordique\'s Johnny \"Temper Tantrum\" Turner notching the win, a first star and POW nomination for a 24 save performance and .923 Save Percentage evening. Greg \"Osama Bin Feiden\" Feiden
It took almost 22 minutes before the scoreless tie was broken when Pierce \"Fierce Mayhem\" Mayhew took a pass from Eric \"The Kremlin\" Krivitzky and buried it past a diving Feiden. Robbie \"Little Debbie\" Debevoise also assisted on that goal.
The Whaler\'s Jay \"Scotty Hartnell\" Zanleoni tied the game for Dead River with a clapper past Turner with 3:59 left in the second period from Jason \"Lucky\" Loomis.
Zanleoni was excellent tonight, filling in as an alternate for the soft rostered Dead River team. Scoring a goal, playing solid defense and imposing his will with that giant chin all over the ice.
Ian \"The Tooth\" Coates put the Nordiques up with 1:15 to play from Roger \"The Dentist\" Phillips to close out scoring in the second period.
A penalty-less game to this point, and a game that would NOT see a visit to the sin-bin, was refreshing for both players and referees. Jason Loomis secured his third star nomination with a clutch goal at 10:32 to tie the game from Mark \"Wiggity\" Weglarz.
The two teams battled for the next five minutes but a highlight real goal by Ryan \"McClutch\" McGovern. The goal came on a pass from Phillips who was stationed behind the net to McG who was streaking to the high slot. \"Kicked to a snapper, under the glove right post. Fuckin\' highlight reel (not really).\" recalled McGovern about his eventual game winning goal.
In the end Dead River\'s short bench tired out and the Nordiques rolled to the ugly win. It wasn\'t their prettiest win, but a \"W\" is a \"W\" in the UVHL and they head into a big battle with the hot Whalers next week.
Dead River has the unenviable task of playing the Gamblers next week...should be ugly.
