Another Slow Start Dooms Cardigan...8-6

The Cardigan Teacher's Union once again put themselves in a giant hole to start a game and despite their best efforts couldn't dig themselves out. Their opponents, The Nordiques, came prepared and jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead.

"Fierce" Pierce Mayhew was a one man wrecking crew, scoring three goals and an assist in the first 4 minutes of play. The first two goals came off of faceoffs to the left of Cardigan's netminder Matty "Tazzy" Albertazzi. Mayhew one the faceoff back to his defenseman who fired the puck on net both times. The first shot found Jordy "McNasty" McGee behind the net who fed Mayhew in front all alone and the second goal Mayhew jammed home the rebound.

Mayhew returned the favor to McGee a minute later before Brian "The Beard" Racicot set up Pierce for his hat trick and a 4-0 lead. Kelly "Defensive Liability" Park made it 5-0 as he broke in all alone and roofed the puck on the backhand...and it looked pretty dismal for Cardigan.

Cardigan broke out of their funk half-way through the first period when Carpino burned Park behind the Nordique's net, walked out in front and roofed his own shot up and over Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner.

After Carpino's first of the night his team seemed to wake up, his goaltender seemed to wake up and Cardigan was back in the game. Their first 5 minutes was ugly, lazy hockey.

During the first intermission the Nordique's were reminded that Cardigan went down 6-1 to the Whaler's two weeks earlier only to see Cardigan battle back and eventually loose 8-7. This was deja vu all over again. Cardigan proceeded to dominate the early parts of the second period, scoring 3 unanswered goals to bring the game back to 5-4 and the Nordiques were playing as if they were terrified to give up the lead.

Carpino added another pair of goals on Turner and Sophie LeClerc added the other. Cardigan had the momentum and carried play until Park threw a knucklepuck on net that ricocheted off of of a Cardigan defenseman and past Albertazzi for a 6-4 lead. It was a shitty goal, but a much needed one for the Nordiques to stop the bleeding.

The third period evened out a bit more as the Nords & Cardigan swapped a pair of goals each. Chris Warrington brought cardigan back within a goal early in the third before Roger "The Dentist Drill" Phillips scored a pair of goals to put the game out of reach. Cardigan kept pushing and Carpino had a beautiful goal with 78 seconds to play followed by a crossbar in the last minute of play, but their dismal start was the end of this game.
