Gamblers Rebound in the 3rd, beat Nordiques 6-5 in shootout

The Gamblers once again prove that they are the best 3rd period team in the UVHL this season. Down 4-2 early in the 3rd period, They scored 3 goals in 4 minutes and 10 seconds to take the lead before the Nordiques tied it up to force a shootout. Tyson Seely continues to be a Nordique killer with his 2nd straight Shootout winner agains the 'Diques. The top line for the Gamblers was outstanding again, turning in all 5 goals and 4 of the 5 assists. The Nordiques had a big night from Jordy "LaForge" McGee (Hatrick) and Kevin "Washer & " Dwyer (2 goals)

The 'Blers started off the scoring half way through the first period when Marc "The Narc" Gattie made a terrific pass from his own zone to Dan "The Animal" Ammel streaking up the middle. Ammel caught the pass with his back turned to Gattie just past his teams blueline, walked in on Turner all alone and beat Turner with a dropped shoulder and quick snapper low glove side. McGee & Roger "The Sadistic Dentist" Phillips tied it up with 2:50 to play as they worked a give and go from the near corner that saw McGee beat Greg "First Period" Feiden with a knuckle puck through a screen. The MMA line made it 2-1 less than a minute later deep in the Nordiques zone, when Ammel chipped the puck to Willy "The Miser" Meyer behind the net. Meyer walked around Kelly "Turntable" Park as if he wasn't there and fired the puck through the crease to Matty "Chicken Legs Marsala" Marrazzo coming hard from the far corner for the goal.

The first period had a nice flow to it as the play was fairly even and both goaltenders were called upon to make some big saves. The 2nd period was all Nordiques as they turned up the heat and dominated the Gamblers, netting the only 2 goals of the frame. The first came from Dwyer just 27 seconds in on a spectacular individual play as he took a pass from Tao "The Aggressive Monk" Smith at center ice and burst down the near boards on his off wing. Dwyer turned on the jets at the circles and cut around defenseman Mikey "Harry" Harrington, across the top of the crease and slipped the puck past Feiden who was down and out on the initial move. McGee put the Nordiques up 3-2 from the tops of the circles at 9:12 on a "slapshot SNIPE, if I may say so myself" as he called it. The remainder of the period had the Nordiques pressing, until the last 20 seconds saw 2 huge turnovers from the Nordiques that led to 2 big saves from Turner. The first turnover came from Mike "Boy Band" O'Neil who thought he could outsmart Willy Meyer behind the goal line, that led to a Meyer walking out in front with the puck. The second saw captain Tao Smith make a tape to tape pass to Ammel at the faceoff dot only to turn around and have Turner save Smith's ass with seconds left on the clock. That was the turning point of the game, waking up the Gamblers for the 3rd frame, and putting an "Oh Shit" feeling in the pit of the Nordique's collective stomachs.

The 'Blers finally woke out of their slumber in the 3rd period, combined with the fact that the Nordiques were running only 2 lines instead of their customary 3 line configuration. The only Nordique still motoring at top speed was McGee who put the Noridques up 5-2 on a breakaway pass from Greg "Mongo" Marsh. After that goal, it was all Gamblers. Meyer cut the lead to 5-3 from Marrazzo at 7:58, only to see Marrazzo snipe Turner with a wristshot off the far boards from Meyer at 3:57 to tie the game. Off the ensuing faceoff, Meyer walked right through McGee at center ice and proceeded to push the Nordique's defensemen back towards their netminder before firing a quick wrister at Turner. Turner made the initial save, but Meyer split the D and picked up his own rebound, made a cut to the far post and fired the puck past Turner as he threw his legs out trying to trip up Meyer just 9 seconds after the last goal for the 5-4 lead. This goal sent Turner into a spasm of anger, hatred & temper tantruming. The Nordiques looked defeated but Kevin Dwyer took the team on his shoulders and tied the game up 69 seconds later as he cut hard to the net, getting taken out by a Gambler defensemen, sending both players, the goaltender & the puck into the net to tie the game up.

Tyson Seely was the only player to score out of 8 in the shootout, sending the Nordiques home shaking their heads again. This was the second time Seely ended a shootout, again, being the 4th shooter for the Gamblers. Turner stopped Meyer, Ammel & Marrazzo before Seely beat him with a move to his backhand and a quick shot off the glove and in. Feiden was awesome, stopping McGee, Dwyer & Phillips for the hard fought win.
