The UVHL Leafs got it started right aganst the newly formed UVHL Canadiens winning 7-1 in the first game of the 2004-05 UVHL season on 10/5/04. Canadiens goalie John Turner faced at least 60 shots behind an unfortunately thin opening night roster as several registrants were no shows for the first game. Those that did attend had their work cut out for them as the experienced Leaf squad tested Turner all night. It was Fred Redden's PPG in the first that started the Blue onslaught at 3:50, this being the first goal on the shiny new game nets at Union Arena (fitting a Canadian got it, eh). Turner kept it close the rest of the first and mid-way into the second until the Leafs scored again at 7:37 by an unknown scorer (there is a #4 on the game sheet but no #4 on the team...) assisted by Jim Dowd. Two more goals by the Leafs in the second at 5:23 unassisted by Dave Fitts and at 2:39 with Dowd connecting from John Murphy to make it 4-0 to start the third. The Canadiens, although working hard and getting to know one another in their first game, kept pace as best they could but fatigue set in and two quick goals made it 6-0 with sub Ben Gardent netting one at 13:32 assisted by Fitts and Murphy and then Dowd again from Murphy at 13:00. Doug Heavisides potted an unassisted effort at 10:00 to make it 7-0, but Ken lallier's shutout was spoiled by newcomer Kirt Joohnson with an unassisted goal of his own with 7:00 left to play. Not even the presence of last year's UVHL leading scorer Kelly Park could spark the Canadiens to score more than one goal on Lallier. Fatigued and sweaty, an acrobatic John Turner said post game that he felt "shellshocked".
