Tuck Beats Nordiques 5-4 in a Shootout

The Nordiques & Tuckies battled tonight in an epic tilt that needed a shootout to determine the winner. The Nordiques, who were embarrassed by Tuck twice this year(9-0 and 8-2) finally got their heads out of their asses and played some hockey. There were some contributing factors to this game.

1. Tuck had just played a tournament or series of games in Montreal the previous weekend and a few players were less than 100%. A few players didn't even make it to the rink that night.
2. The Nordiques were missing quite a few players and brought on an alternate in Jay "The Zamboni" Zanleoni who's veteran savvy-ness and physical play helped solidify the Nordique's second line.
3. The Nordiques moved defenseman Kelly "The Mouth" Park to offense and burried him on the wing. "We felt Kelly could do less harm up front than in front of our own net. Was it a coincidence that the Nordiques only let up 4 goals tonight instead of 8 or 9? I think not." recalled one Nordique player who requested to remain annonymous.
4. Jordy "McBreakaway" McGee was insanely good tonight, sparking rumors that he switched to light beer before his hockey games instead of Guinness.

With those factors contributing heavily to the game, this one got of on a great start for the Nordiques as they seemed to carry play for most of the first period. Peter "Cougar" Mellencamp opened up the scoring at 9:32 from Jed "Old" McDonald and Jordy McGee got his first of the night with an unassisted goal on the next shift for the only two goals of the first period.

McGee put the Nordiques up 2-1 on the first shift of the second period with a faceoff to Mike "Divination" Devine's right. "Fierce" Pierce Mayhew won the faceoff to McGee who was set up behind him at the top of the circle. McGee walked to his right, cocked and mis-fired, fooling everyone on the ice. He managed to regain the puck, took another stride to the high slot and beat Devine, possibly through a screen high glove slide.

The game was in a stale-mate for nearly 9 minutes when Brandon "The Harry One" Harrington burried a Mellencamp pass with 4:39 to play. Harrington followed that goal up with a last minute goal from the near corner that caught the Nordique's Johnny "Temper Tantrum" Turner sleeping. "The release was so fast, I thought he was going behind the net" was Turner's only response. Great shot, but one Turner could have had.

END OF THE SECOND PERIOD: Nordiques 2, Tuck 3

McGee recorded the hat trick with 11:39 left in the game when a point shot from Ryan "The Govenator" McGovern caught Devine up high, the rebound landed behind him in the crease. McGee took a whack at it and the puck found the back of the net. With 9:17 to go a turnover down low by the Nord's Stuey "The Funmeister" Grande ended up behind his own net. Shawn "McDefense" McDermott chased behind the net leaving McDonald all alone in front and Spencer "Mo" Vaughn found him at the top of the crease for the one-timer past Turner.

A drop pass from Park at the top of Tuck's zone let McGee walk in all alone on Devine and bury one high glove side for his 4th of the night and the game was tied.

The Nordiques had to spend the final 23 seconds of the game killing off a Zanleoni Hooking penalty, and then the game went to a shootout where Harrington and Wannop both scored for Tuck while McGee & Mayhew failed.

For a hockey fan...or at least a Men's League Hockey fan, this is about as good as it gets. A clean, high-tempo, high skilled hockey game that saw 8 goals, 2 excellent goaltending performances and a shootout. Other than the little Zanleoni hook at the end, there were no penalties.
