Whalers Are Streakin' - Come From Behind to Beat Brewers 7-6

The Whalers have struggled all season long, amassing only one win in their first 21 games of play. They officially closed out the season with their first winning streak in years with back to back barn-burners, rattling the Nordiques 8-7 last week and the Brewers 7-6 tonight.

Many factors have played into the Whalers recent success:

1. Jay Zanleoni chopped off his horrible mullet and moved back to solidify a shaky defense.
2. A youth movement has brought speed & consistency to the Whalers offense.
3. Kenny Lallier got a new shipment of Viagra in this month.
4. They got to play against Kelly Park in both wins.

Many things have been said about this game, and most often you will hear the following words muttered: "Kelly Park single-handedly lost this game for the Brewers." And it's true. Subbing in for the short-handed Brew-Crew was the Nordique's Kelly Park who tried to get too cute with 5 minutes to go in a tied game, turning the puck over in his own zone, leading to the go-ahead goal.

Park's blunder resulted in a Whaler lead, but there was plenty of action leading up to that point, including the Brewers jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead, which looked like the end for a miserable Whaler's team. Keith "Large 'N Charge" Lazarcyk put the Brewer's up 1-0 jamming home some garbage with 5:13 to play. Garren "Penalty" Poirier made it 2-0 from "Tennis" Cort Pomeroy in the next minute before Park put the Brewer's up 3-0 on the powerplay.

END OF THE FIRST: Whalers ZERO, Brewers 3

The Whalers added all 3 goals in the 2nd period on an unassisted slapper from Jay "The boni" Zanleoni who realized he has zero offensive ability and moved himself back on defense. "Skating backwards is really over-rated" says Zanleoni, "I mean seriously, you can do everything faster going forwards, and your hockey mullet doesn't flow right if you are moving backwards." Chris "Google" Gogan made it 3-2 with 3:04 to play before Mike "Sean" Avery scored an interesting goal to tie the game on the next shift. Avery broke into the Brewer's zone with speed, "pretended" to lose the puck as he was heading behind the Brewer's net, but regained the puck and fired a quick shot along the ice past Matty "The Eagle" Crowson.

END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 3, Brewers 3

Chris "Doobie" Dubin had a SICK goal to open the 3rd period, slicing through the neutral zone before splitting the defense and sliding a goal past Kenny "G" Lallier as he fell to the ice, putting the Brewers up 4-3 in the first minute of the 3rd period. Jason "Grumbling" Gramling added a quick pair just 73 seconds apart for the 5-4 lead on a Brewer's turnover and a nice tic-tac-toe goal from young guns Cody "Victory" Vose & AJ "The Pitbull" Hamel.

Brian "Smitty" Smith had a nice tip-in from a point shot to tie the game yet again at 5-5 with 10:14 to play. With Pomeroy in the box for tripping, Park's blunder reared it's head on the penalty kill. A quick d-to-d pass behind their own net saw Gogan chase Park out to the slot where he lost the puck and was stripped by Hamel. Being the only man in his own zone, Park couldn't stop the backdoor pass to Gogan who buried his first ever one-timer for the go-ahead goal.

Hamel found Vose with 24 seconds later for the empty netter before Poirier made a great individual play slamming home his own rebound with 15 seconds remaining...but it was too little too late for the Brewers.

END OF REGULATION: Whalers 7, Brewers 6

The tale of the Whale is that Kelly Park sucks, and his awful play led to losses for both the Nordiques & Brewers agains the Whalers to close out the season. The Whaler's top line of Gramling, Vose & Hamel (The Pre-Pubescent Line) line was outstanding despite not hitting puberty yet. The Pre-Pubescent line combined for 9 points (3g & 6a) tonight and their youth and exuberance is something for their opponents to watch out for.
