7:10 PM – WABA, White River Junction
The schedule got bumped up, the coffee hasn’t kicked in, and yet somehow the Whalers and Lumberjacks are expected to play high-level hockey at 7:10 PM. One of these teams sits comfortably atop the standings; the other is checking Zillow for basement real estate.
The Whalers roll in at 5-0-1, first in the league with a +13 goal differential and a defense stingier than a beer-league Venmo split. The Lumberjacks are sitting at 1-4-0, but still boast the all-time edge in this matchup: 26–11 in the series. Recently, though, the tide has turned: the Whalers have taken four of the last five meetings, including 6–1 and 3–2 wins already this season.
“We’re trying to honor the rich tradition of losing to the Lumberjacks,” Whalers forward Dan Fenton allegedly said. “But it’s hard when we keep accidentally winning.”
Storylines & Stat Snacks
Whalers: Top of the Food Chain (Mostly)
- Ben Rouillard (5G, 4A, 9 PTS) sits tied for the league scoring lead and has quietly become the human version of a backdoor tap-in.
- The “Whale of a Top Four” in points: Rouillard, Fenton (3G, 4A), Dan VeNard (3G, 4A), and Logan Caffrey (3G, 4A), plus blue-line distributor Cavan Benjamin (2G, 5A). If they were any more balanced, they’d be a yoga class.
- In net, Jered Condon is a wagon: 5-1-0, 1.17 GAA, .947 SV%. That is not a typo. That’s the stat line of a goalie who reads scouting reports and labels his Tupperware.
“We’re trying to keep shots to the outside,” Condon said. “And by ‘outside’ I mean preferably outside the building.”
Lumberjacks: DeLuca and the Desperate Defense
- Nathan DeLuca (5G, 4A, 9 PTS) is tied for the league lead in scoring and has become the official “Sorry boys, I’ll do it myself” engine of the Lumberjacks offense.
- Help comes from do-it-all blueliner Dillan Pierce (0G, 4A) and defense partner Andrew Kimbell (0G, 4A), while Jacob Charles (1G, 2A) and Carter Auch (2G, 1A) try to remember what the neutral zone is for.
- The concern? Goals against. The Jacks have allowed 20 goals in 5 games. Starter Luke McCormick sits at 1-4-0, 4.00 GAA, .870 SV%, which is less “brick wall” and more “nice screen door.”
“Our defensive system is called ‘oh no, oh no, oh no,’” McCormick reportedly explained. “We’re workshopping a new one called ‘backcheck.’”
Head-to-Head: Old Bully vs. New Boss
Historically, the Lumberjacks bullied this matchup: 26–11 all-time series edge. Names like DeLuca, Pierce, Kimbell, and Jordan McGee have all taken turns carving up the Whalers over the years.
Recently, though, the script flipped. The Whalers have won four of the last five, including this season’s 6–1 and 3–2 victories. “We’re just trying to make the series record look respectable before we all retire,” joked Blaine Gour.

Condon is leading the league in “goals not allowed” while McCormick leads in “deep sighs after defensive breakdowns.”

Predictions
- Kelly’s Gut Feel: The Lumberjacks play desperate, finally remember what backpressure is, and keep it tight for two periods before the Whalers’ depth and Condon’s save percentage strangle the life out of the third.
- Bold Take: DeLuca and Rouillard trade goals like Pokémon cards.
Final Predicted Score: Whalers 5 – Lumberjacks 3 Over/Under: Over 6.5 hits, goals, and sighs combined.
“We just have to keep it simple,” Gour said. “Pucks in deep, bodies to the net, and absolutely no looking at Condon’s save percentage before warmups. That part’s just depressing.”
