Cardigan Overcomes Slow Start, Beats Whalers 9-7 in Shootout

Cardigan has had a history of slow starts in the UVHL this season followed by a late charge to make the games interesting. Most notably their last game against the Whalers started as a 5-0 deficit that turned into an 8-7 loss and the Nordiques also started out a 5-0 hole that they fought back to an 8-6 loss. Bottom line is that they are deadly late in a game.

Tonight they did just what they do, going down 7-2 before storming back with 5 consecutive goals in the last 16 minutes of play forcing a shootout and taking a big win to get back to .500 on the season.

Owen Carpino was the catalyst again, but another player was pivotal in the win as well. Cardigan's Sophie Leclerc "was the best player on the ice" recalled a Whaler's player after the game. "She set up 3 or 4 goals, scored one herself and was all over the ice." LeClerc was even responsible for the game tying goal with under 2 minutes to play.

This was a high-scoring affair with every skater on the ice registering at least a point. Leading the way for the Whalers was Scotty "Too Hotty" Shaw with a goal and 4 assists, Dillon Pierce with a pair of goals and an assist and Tommy Crapser with a pair of goals.

Cardigan was powered by Carpino(3g, 1a), Graham Gauthier(2g) and a goal and pair of assists from both LeClerc & David McCusker.

Cardigan's goaltender Matty Albertazzi was soft early on and then came into his own as his team was turning things around. At the other end the Whaler's Kenny "LaArthritis" Lallier started strong, but both he and his team tired out and the youthful Cardiganians took advantage.

The game went to a shootout and both Carpino & David McCusker scored on Lallier and Scotty Shaw and Jay Zanleoni were stopped by Albertazzi.

Cardigan wins.
