Whalers Advance to Finals With 7-3 Win Over Brewers

Coming off an epic shutout win over the 21-0-0 Gamblers, the Whalers seem to be the team to beat. After roughing up the hard-nosed Brewers tonight 7-3, it seems as though they are a serious contender to win the Whalen Cup on April 10th.

The Whalers jumped out early and never looked back, tallying three goals in the first period to pave the way for the win. Matt "Tazzy" Albertazzi saw 42 shots on the night, stopping 35 and making a half-dozen key saves in the third period trying to keep his team in the game. The Whaler's Kenny "The Old Man" Lallier came up big when needed but wasn't put to the test quite like Albertazzi.

A.J. "Ham-Hands" Hamel was outstanding for the Whalers with a pair of goals and two assists for the First-Star of the game. Hamel netted the first two goals of the game, setting the tone and driving the Brewers to fits. The first goal of the game came at 10:23 when "Jumbo" Joe Gaudet found Hamel for a one-timer at the top of the circles off the crossbar and in. Hamel struck again 25 seconds later as he took a pass from Jason "Loopy" Loomis and flew down the far boards. Hamel turned a Brewer's defenseman, cut across the top of the crease and roofed the puck up and over Albertazzi for the 2-0 lead.

Gaudet put a punctuation mark on the period with a breakaway goal with 8 seconds left, throwing a dipsy-do at Albertazzi before moving the puck to his backhand and slikding the puck under Tazzy.

END OF THE FIRST: Whalers 3, Brewers 0

The Brewers finally got on the scoreboard early in the second period on a Whaler turnover at the blue line. Chris "Smoke a" Dubin picked off the pass and led a 2 on 1 into the Whaler's zone where he fed Keith "Bubba" Lazarczyk with a sweet backhand pass for the goal. The Whalers pressed adding a goal with 8:30 to play when Gaudet cut in on the Brewer's Garren Poirier and flipped a rocket over the glove of Albertazzi with nothing to shoot at.

"Bubba" scored again, this time jamming home a garbage goal from the top of the crease, again assisted by Dubin. Dillan "Fierce" Pierce made it 5-2 on a beautiful tic-tac-goal from Cody "Mullet" Vose and Hamel as he crashed the net and put the puck 5-holio on Tazzy.

The period ended with both teams scoring a pair of goals, but the score could be anything but significant in describing the events of the period. The Whalers Kenny Lallier needed to make only 3 saves to Albertazzi's 15 saves. It was totally domination by the Whalers, but Albertazzi stood tall keeping his team in the game.

END OF THE SECOND: Whalers 5, Brewers 2

The Brewers came out of their slumber in the third period outshooting the Whalers 14-11 and Albertazzi was amazing yet again, but the effort was futile. The Whalers added another pair of goals to the Brewers 1. The Brew Crew rung the bell first making the game interesting on the powerplay. Matty "The Eagle" Crowson scored the goal after jamming home a Brock "Booger" Barton point shot with 11:32 to play. The Whalers finished out the game with a breakaway goal from Pierce with 5:36 to play, and then on the following shift Vose walked through his centerman and put the puck 5-hole on Tazzy.
