Gamblers Win Bitchfest 2011, 8-1.

The two most hated teams in the UVHL faced-off in what is now going to be officially called BitchFest 2011. Neither team is particular liked by both the corp of referees and all other teams, and both for different reasons. The Gamblers are clearly the best team to grace the UVHL in it's 8 years of existence, yet they are the least gracious and poorest sportsmen in the league. The Gamblers run up the score and then scream and whine about offsides, icing and penaltys when they are up by 10 goals over their opponents.

The Brewers play with an edge, bordering on dirty and often crossing that line...which is fine, until their opponents return the favor, then they immediately start whining and complaining. They can dish it out, but clearly cannot take it.

That combination makes a volatile concoction...somewhat like the equivalent of a hockey Molotov cocktail. This one got ugly early and saw 37 minutes of penalties, 21 of those going to the Big Bad Brewers. That physical play from the Brewers may have worked, as they kept the two leading point scorers this season out of the back of the net. I'll have to check the record books, but I'm pretty sure no team has shut down BOTH Matty "The Milkman" Marrazzo and Willy "Mighty Mouse" Meyer, keeping them out of the goal column.

It took over six minutes for the Gamblers to score, and of course it came on the Power Play with the Brewer's Garren "...teed penalty" Poirier in the box for tripping. The goal was scored by their stellar rookie defenseman Niick "McStick" McDonald, who added another goal in the third period to earn himself a second star of the game honor.

Rookie Martin Tomanik had another stellar night in only his second game, adding a pair of goals and assists to his season total, earning himself the first star of this game.

The third star of the game was another Gambler, the goaltender who made 12 of 13 saves for probably the easiest win of his career. Despite the low shot count, Jeremy "The Seed" Seidling had to remain sharp and shake off some rust after long periods of inactivity.

In the end, the Gamblers received a pair of goals from Dan "Danimal" Ammel, Tomanik and MacDonald and single scores from Gary Smith and Topo LaCroix for an 8-1 win. The Brewers only goal came from netminder turned forward Matty "The Eagle" Crowson early in the second period.

This game was close for over a period but the Gamblers did what they do, wearing down their opponents and pulling away in the second half.

It is nights like this that make me VERY thankful that I am not reffing this year.
