Dead River plays great in 2 goal loss to Gamblers

It was a 9-on-8 battle, and I had initially thought it would be high scoring. Instead, we saw yet another defensive battle that Dead River Oilers Captain & GM Greg Hadley called "a victory for my team". Last week's POW nominee Dan Ammel hit the post behind Greg Feiden in the DR net in the first minute of the game. Feiden made a nice save at 13:40 coming across the net. Marc Gattie put a shot towards the net from the point that was tipped into the top corner by the UVHL's 2nd leading scorer Matt Marrazzo at 11:40. Shots were 4-2 at that point. Feiden made a nice save on Ammel at 10:50. Marrazzo triped DR winger Jason Loomis as he came out of the zone with the puck at 4:22. There was a long stretch with no whistles. A nice breakout was led by Alexandra Zagaria on the PP as she was pursued by the very speedy Topo LaCroix, and Ally shook him off and made the sweet pass to a streaking Loomis. FINALLY a team got 10 shots on goal in a period against the Gamblers at the 1:06 mark, and shots stood at 13-11 for the Gamblers at the first buzzer.

A backhand screen shot from the slot beat Feiden early in the second at 14:27 as Jason Young pounced on a rebound shot from Scott Fraser to put the Gamblers up 2-0. JY then went to the box for slashing at 12:02, and DR could barely penetrate the Gamblers' zone and did not generate any SOG. Rick Golden had some nice moves in tight for a shot on Jered Condon at 9:03. Shots were 5-2 for the Gamblers at that point. The hardworking Loomis and Mike "Quiet Giant" Harrington got tangled in the corner while battling for the puck. Evan Duggan went for interference at 7:30, but you could have called it a bodycheck if you wanted to. Feiden was kept busy at 4:13, and there was lots of back-and-forth action around the Oilers net, and Feiden was moving very well side-to-side. Dead River was playing some great team defense! A big save at 2:37 was made by Feiden on LaCroix after he was fed a nice pass in front. Shots were 16-3 for the Gamblers, and remarkably it was only a 2 goal lead.

In the third Loomis went for holding as he and marrazzo got tangled and went to the ice, and on the PP LaCroix crashed the net on a Fraser shot and got the goal at 13:01. That was the first SOG for either team in the period. Some nice passes were exchanged by Duggan, Golden, and Dean Cashman for DR's first shot on Condon in the third, but Condon was there. JY was loud on the bench, and while he was in the box, all game cheering on his teammates. A big shot by Golden was redirected past Condon off Hadley's ass for DR's first goal to make it 3-1 at 10:42. Duggan also got an assist on the play, and shots were 3-3. Ally was smooth once again behind the net evading a check behind the net with a sweet "shake n bake" move, and then she made a long pass to Golden at the far blueline for a shot on net. She was positionally sound, made good first passes, and her skills and smarts helped DR to elevate their game defensively. Meyer got off a quick shot at 7:04 and Feiden made the nice save. Golden had a great chance, but Condon made a sliding outstretched left pad save at 5:15, and Fraser took a bodychecking penalty on the play trying to control Golden. The Oilers made a nice advance up the ice on the PP that led to a Loomis shot at 4:11. Both goalies were excellent tonight, but Feiden was tested the most. Bobby Rosati played som enice D on LaCroix, and then took the puck out of the zone. There was debate post-game at Bentley's regarding who was faster: Meyer or LaCroix? or Rosati or LaCroix? DR pulled Feiden at 1:20, and they held off two Gamblers chances at the open net. One was nixed at the blueline by Duggan who played some great D on Meyer to prevent him from going in on the empty net.

Final Score: Gamblers 3, Dead River 1

Final Tally: LaCroix played great and got 1G, 1A, while Fraser got 2A. Feiden was unbelievable in net this week, and got shelled with 42 Gamblers shots. Condon was excellent, and solid, and also gets into the Three Stars saving 23 of 24.

Final Analysis: A surprising result, and an excellent defensive effort by Dead River keeping the Gamblers to only 3 goals, and the MMA line to only 1 point. This was as good as a victory for the Oilers, and they celebrated like it post-game. Where were the Gamblers? Celebrating at home, I guess...

See you on the ice!
