Gamblers roll right over Brewers 7-3

The Brewers had a light bench to start the game, only 6 players, and then 3 more showed up. It was a BOOOOR-ING start to the game, and nothing exciting at all happened until 6:41 when Gamblers D Marc Gattie made a nice diving block. At the other end Matt Crowson made a nice blocker save coming across the net at 6:32. Dan Ammel couldn't find the net on the rebound with Crowson down and out scrambling at 6:25. "The Original" Chris Johnson was pursued and stopped on a partial breakaway at 5:59. A Gamblers goal was called off, the ref could not see the puck, but referee Kelly Park came up to me afterwards saying that he was "99 percent sure that Crowson was cheating" but couldn't prove it. Crowon then stopped a backhander by Evan Seely at 5:47 staying sharp. There was only 1 ref at this point, and another Brewer latecomer showed up. Shots were 11-5 for the Gamblers at 5:05. A bad pass by Bill Fletcher right to Will Meyer at the blueline sent Willy in for the scoring chance that Crowson made a nice save on Meyer's wrister. Matt Marrazzo scored at 3:35 on a pass across from Ammel and Jason Young giving him a opportunity to get off a nice shot from the slot. At 2:49 the Brewers had a good chance in front of Jered Condon, but he made the left pad save. Another latecomer made it to the Brewers bench before Meyer scored on a rebound off a Scott Fraser shot at 1:07. Shots were a ridiculous 18-7 for the Gamblers.

A backhander off a rebound in the slot solved Condon at 13:30 as Keith Lazarczyk found the net from Fletcher and Brian Smith. Aaron Mancuso went right in off the face-off but put the puck wide. The Brewers were outshooting the Gamblers 5-2 at the 11:12 mark. Another backhand goal off a rebound, this time for Ammel, went in at 11:04 from Marrazzo. Garren "Dr. Hook" Poirier put a hook on Ammel, and then Ammel scored a PPG at 10:48 from Marc Gattie. The Gamblers hit the post past Crowson at 10:31. Gattie tripped CJ in the corner at 9:54, and a bad pass by Brock Barton on the Brew Crew's PP led to two Topo LaCroix shots. Ammel completed the Natural Hatty at 7:24 on passes across the ice from linemates Meyer & Marrazzo. Shots were now 9-9 at 6:37, and the game was getting physical. Marrazzo was held by Poirier in the corner, and then Marrazzo nailed Barton who threw Marrazzo's stick afterwards. A pissed off Barton railed a slapper past Condon's glove at 4:33 from Poirier and Mancuso. Crowson made the save on a LaCroix breakaway at 3:11, and then another breakaway save on Seely with his blocker at 2:41. Marrazzo put his shoulder into Cort Pomeroy at 0:11 and sent him flying - no call. Shots ended at 16-13 Gamblers for the period.

The Gamblers had a 3 shots to zero advantage at 12:04. There was a bad non-call at 11:35 as LaCroix was taken out into the boards, but luckily he wasn't hurt. Meyer sped in for a backhander pursued by barton at 10:12, but there was no call on the hook, and Crowson made the save. Shots were now 5-2. poirier hooked down Marrazzo behind the net at 9:56 as they both raced for the puck. A horrible PK clearing attempt by Fletcher with 2 teammates open saw Fletch shoot the puck into the penalty box. Crowson made a nice save on Meyer at 8:37. Marrazzo got to the corner first, and then passed it out to Ammel who put a quick low shot past Crowson's left pad at 6:21. A twisted wrister at 6:09 by Fletcher was wired into the top corner after poirier picked off a pass in the neutral zone and went in to find Fletcher open for the shot. Ammel scored his 5th goal at 5:41 from linemates Meyer & Marrazzo to shouls of "Somebody stop him!" from the Gamblers bench. Condonn made 2 nice saves as the Brewers crashed the net at 2:31. Marrazzo hit the post at 1:44, and then the Brew Crew made a nice last minute push for a goal but could not get another one. Shots were 16-12 Gamblers.

Final Score: Gamblers 7, Brewers 3

Final Tally: Dan Ammel had 5G, 1 A for a remarkable 6 point night, including a Natural Hat Trick in the 2nd period in a span of 3:40. Ammel's linemates Matt Marrazzo (1G, 4A) and Will Meyer (1G, 2A) help him comprise the famous "MMA" line, and they combined for 14 of the 17 points awarded to the Gamblers. These three players are all in the top 4 in UVHL scoring so far this season. Crowson faced 50 frickin shots, and Condon had 32 come his way.

Final Analysis: The MMA line dominated. If one has an off night, or is away, then the other two pick up the slack. If all three are rolling, like they were on this night, then look out! The Brewers look so much better with Bill Fletcher in their line-up. He adds depth, scoring touch, and skill to a light roster. Welcome back, Billy! The Gamblers keep outshooting opponents by a ridiculous margin. Teams have success against them only when they put pucks in tight and go to the net, and they completely waste their time shooting from the outside. Condon is way too good to get beat on anything less than a professional level shot (i.e. Pattison, Zaneloni). So far, it looks like the only team in the way of the Gamblers second Whalen Cup in three years is Tuck.

P.S. The Gamblers didn't even bitch once during this game! However, the Brewers like to ref from the bench way too fuckin' much...

See you on the ice!
