Gamblers double up Whalers 6-3

There was lots of snow, a little freezing rain, but both squads made it for the game. The numbers were a little light to start, only 8-on-8, but just enough to have a good pace to the game. Whalers captain, GM, and veteran goaltender extrordinaire Ken Lallier was away, and the very reliable Jeremy Seidling tended the pipes in his absence. Gamblers center Allison Malcolm was in attendance but was on the bench coaching her teammates due to a knee injury that kept her out. Early on Whalers center Jay Zaneloni made a nice move but missed the net. Gamblers players Marc Gattie and Dan Ammel had a 2-on-1 against Jason Rouillard, but they missed the net as well. The Gamblers had sustained pressure for well over a minute, but they had no SOG as there were many blocked shots by the Whalers and the net was missed several times. Z beat Mike Harrington along the boards and cut across Condon's crease but the puck just got away from him. Shots were 6-6 at the 6:26 mark. The Gamblers gained a player arriving late and it was now 9-on-8. Marrazzo grabbed the puck from a scrum along the boards in the neutral zone and cut in for a great chance on Seidling, but the save was made. Gattie had a whiffer at the blueline and the puck came out and was grabbed by Jason Gramling who went in on a partial breakaway down the left side with Condon making the save. Topo LaCroix hit the crossbar at 1:28 past Seidling. By the end of the period it was 9-on-9 as the last straggler made it in, and the shots were 13-11 in favor of the Gamblers.

In the second Gamblers D Jason Young scored on a slapper from Marrazzo at 13:28. Soon after LaCroix scored from the point at 13:01, and then LaCriox went to the box for tripping at 12:29 after upending Zaneloni. Gramling made a sweet drag move, but Harrington took a sprawling poke check to take the puck away! The Gamblers went up 3-0 on LaCroix's quick shot going the other way across the top of the slot on a screen at 8:06. Whalers winger Nick Hall had a breakaway at 7:16, but Condon came up with the big save again. Coming back down the ice was LaCroix and Seidling sent him back to the bench shaking his head on a Gamblers breakaway. Both goalies made nice saves! That was only the third shot on Condon during the period, and the 12th on Seidling. Z beat Harrington wide and went across the crease for a SICK backhander to the top corner over Condon's blocker after he was fed by a sweet long pass by Gramling from the defensive zone to the offensive blueline at 4:38! Just over a minute later Gamblers captain Will Meyer had a breakaway and put his own backhander over Seidling's blocker. There was a great chance for the Whalers at 1:43 for Gramling from Zach Aher off of a Gamblers turnover, but Condon was wicked shaaaarp making a sprawling save with his stick! During the period the Gamblers had 20 shots on Seidling, and the Whalers had 7 on Condon.

The final frame saw Whalers D Jason Rouillard take the puck at the blueline, beat a few Gamblers defenders, cut right, make a sweet pass across to Gramling who waitied to tuck the puck past Condon at 13:39. The Gamblers first shot on goal came at 12:55 on a passing play down low that put them up 5-2 on Evan Seely's first of the night from linemate Scott Fraser who usually anchors the D. Seidling made a nice save coming across with the glove at 11:01, and then made a point blank save on Fraser with the pads at 9:45. Along the boards Z tried to cut past LaCroix with the puck and LaCroix interfered with the freight train and received a bodycheck for his trouble, and both went to the box at 9:22. The Whalers made a nice passing play for a goal at 8:47 as latecomer Cody Vose scored to narrow the margin back to 2. Hall went to the box at 6:27 for a hook he "didn't even remember". Hall went to the box at 6:27 for a hook he "didn't even remember". Shots were 10-5 for the Gamblers at 6:02. The Whalers called a timeout at 2:09, but the Gamblers scored after hitting the post and Ammel picking up the backhander at 1:45. Marrazzo and Meyer had last second chances, but Seidling continued his great play right to the end of the game. Shots finished at: 53 on Seidling, 29 on Condon.

Final Score: Gamblers 6, Whalers 3

Final Tally: Evan Seely led the Gamblers scoring with 1G, 2A; and Topo LaCroix had 2G. Jason Gramling had 1G, 1A for the Whalers.

Final Analysis: The first star was Whalers goalie Jeremy Seidling facing 53 shots. I can't seem to get him in the roster to officially post it on the drop down menu... Kelly help! Stupid doctor... This was a very entertaining game and it was fun to watch. McGee and Johnson did a good job reffing, and they only missed 1 or 2 obvious calls. If the shots were cut down by a third, the Whalers had a shot because their scoring chances were of higher quality overall.
