Kings over Queens

A surprisingly low scoring game shocked the UVHL as the Brewers outlasted the Storm Kings 4-3. The Brewer's Petey "The Hamburgler" Bartline snagged 42 vulcanized biscuits from the Storm KIngs on his way to his league leading 7th win of the season. The Storm Kings outshot the Brewers 45-30, but made too many mistakes in the first period which ended up dooming the Storm Queens......er......Kings. I call them the Queens because they are really starting to amp up their BITCHING AND WHINING, They complained about virtually every penalty, despite only taking 5 penalties to the Brewers 9. The worst were goaltender Danny "Vein Popping Screamer" French & Artie "Flailing Limbs" Stout. Stout threw a temper tantrum in the penalty box after hauling down a Brewer on a one-on-one. He screamed a list of profanities that I had never even heard before, kicked at any movable object in the box, threw his stick and then proceeded to bark at ref / commish Shawn McDermott & scorekeeper / commish Kelly Park. Actions that will not be tolerated again. The Frenchman blew a gasket 3 or 4 times after Park proved that he wasn't smart enough to run the clock and forgot to start it.

The Storm Kings were running a short bench, with only 2 subs, but pulled in brother of Storm Kings sniper "Roof It" Robbie Pattison. Pattison's brother Dale, proved to be a good addition to an already solid team. Of the 7 goals in this game, six were scored in the first period, putting the Brewers up 4-2. The Storm Kings tightened up their ranks and shut down the Brew Crew's potent offense for the last 30 minutes. Despite giving up 4 goals on the first 11 shots of the game, Dan French was outstanding as he stopped 3 Brewers breakaways, and added another 8 or 9 game saving stops in there as well. The first came just a minute in as Chris "Turtle" Johnson dished a perfect backhander to center ice and a streaking Billy "The Kid" Fletcher. French came out and snagged the quick snapper with his glove, it was a "save and a beaut." Shortly after that the heaviest man in the UVHL, Danny "Chubby Hubby" Charrette regretted stuffing his face with those last 10 pre-game twinkies, as he had an open net sliding into Frenchy's backdoor. Apparently Charrette's belly got in the way of him properly one timing the puck for the goal. The game started out with a nice flow, as the play traversed North to South without a whistle until Alfonse "The Fonz" Sorrentino fired a pass up the far boards to "Turtle" Johnson. Johnson walked into the Storm Kings zone and blasted a slap shot along the ice and inside the far post from the top of the far circle to put the Brewers up 1-0 at 11:19. With 7:20 to go, Stout turned the puck over at his own blue line giving Fletcher a breakaway on Danny French. French kicked out his left pad to make the save then threw the puck to Patty "Cakes" Turcotte who in turn fed Robbie "Patty Cakes" Pattison at center ice. Pattison walked into the zone, beat a defender and cut across the crease, leaving everyone in his wake including Bartline, before throwing the puck in the empty net to tie the game up with 7:02 to play.

It was all pretty much Storm Kings throught the first 10 minutes but the Brewers capitalized on another turnover deep in the Kinger's zone. Sean "McOffensivelyChallenged" McCabe took the puck behind the King's net and was professionally tied up by Patty Turcotte, but managed to kick the puck to Christian "Pipes" Isaac. Isaac made a quick, hard move to the front of the net and wrapped the puck on an unsuspecting Frenchy to put the Brewers up 2-1 with 5:13 to play. McCabe & Isaac connected again just 55 seconds later when McCabe hit Isaac with a cross ice 100 foot pass. The puck jumped off of Isaac's stick and headed to the Storm King's corner where Frenchy came out aggressively to play it. Isaac chipped the puck past Frenchy and fired a ZERO angle shot from the corner, hitting the post and jumping out into the high slot where McCabe one-timed the puck into the open net.

With 2:30 to play in the first, Robbie "Toe Drag" Pattison threw TWO one-armed toe drags around some helpless Brewers, only to lose the puck in the slot......it was DISGUSTING. "Mean" Dean Cashman made it 3-2 with a triple-deke after jamming home a Ronnie "The Sprite" Dupuis breakaway rebound with 1:32 to play. Dupuis tried beating Bartline 5-hole, but it was a save and a beaut. The Storm Kings continued to carry the play, but their turnovers were devestating to their game tonight as Tommy Scull "Crusher" made an ill-advised backhand pass from the boards through the middle of the ice. The horrible pass was picked off by Brock "Lesnar" Barton who walked in and BLASTED a slapshot from the far faceoff dot past Frenchy, low glove side. That goal was the last goal of the 1st period, the last goal that the Brewers would score and would still be the game winner.

END OF THE FIRST: Storm Kings 2, Brewers 4
SAVES: French(STK) 7, Bartline(BRE) 18

The second period was a little more even as the Brewers outshot the Kingers 11 to 10. The feverish pace of the first period seemed to slow down and the Storm Kings tighted up their own defensive play. The first 8 or 9 minutes had little to show until Chris "Turtle" Johnson came out of the penalty box with 7 minutes to play and broke in all alone on Frenchy. He then continued to bumble and stumble and eventually lose the puck, as his mind was obviously moving faster than the rest of him. Robbie Pattison scored his 2nd of the night as a shot was deflected from the point and flew high in the air, coming down into the crease. Both Bartline & Pattison jumped up to catch the puck, with Pattison proving he had a better vertical. I'm not quite sure what happened, but as Pattison brought the puck down to his stick and looked to make a pass, the puck was deflected into the net.....or so it looked to me. That goal made it a 4-3 with 2:38 to play in the 2nd.

END OF THE SECOND: Storm Kings 3, Brewers 4
SAVES: French(STK) 16, Bartline(BRE) 29

The third period started to get ugly, as the two teams racked up 4 penalties apiece. Ian "Fish" Gill had the first good chance for either team as he walked in on Bartline all alone and snapped a HEAVY shot high and wide, blocker side. At 11:47 Stout took his 2nd of 3 penalties on the night and threw a temper tantrum in the box. He thent told the ref that if he wanted to see him hurt someone he would and followed up with a matching roughing penalty 40 seconds after leaving the box. Poor sportsmanship at it's finest. The Storm Kings then had a couple of powerplays, including a 5 on 3 that they just couldn't break through on. It was an excellent kill from the Brewers. Frenchy made ANOTHER spectacular glove save with just over 6 minutes to play as Brian Smith stole the puck right off of Gilly's stick and walked in all alone, keeping the Storm Kings in the game. The Kingers continued to press the final minutes, but the heart of the Brewers just wouldn't let the Kings capitalize. The most telling statement of the Brewers desire came with 15 seconds left as Brock Barton went down to his belly to block a Robbie Pattison slap shot which very well could have been a game saver.
