Bruins Top Leafs in Fugly 10-9 Scorefest on Feb 6th

This is the one you'd like to forget, no matter if you won or lost. Best to bury your frustration in some beer and wings at OTG post-game and move on. It was like pond hockey on Union Arena ice, and it really wasn't pretty. NINETEEN goals were scored, and there really isn't any explanation for it. Not only were the Bruins shorthanded to start the game, but they had a goalie sub in net in place of regular goalie, GM and captain Greg Hadley, who skated out for the game on the forward lines due to the short bench. Jon Chamberlain, former Woodstock High goaltender and now a regular netminder on Thursday nights in the UAHL, protected the pipes in place of Hads. The B's started the game with less than 2 lines, and the Leafs had 2 lines plus one. Things did not look good for the Bruins to start the game and the odds were against them. But, that is why we always play the game, isn't it?

The Leafs started the scoring early in the first when sniper Dave Fitts put one past Chamberlain at 12:59 from defensemen Leaf captain Sean Casavant and Kirt Johnson. B's F Derek DeYoung took a hooking call at 11:14, and then B's F Rawley Massoth did the same at 9:11 just as the first penalty was ending. This time the Leafs took advantage and Jason Loomis scored at 8:42 from Brian Racicot to make it 2-0. Things seemed to be going according to plan, and as expected, but nobody told the Bruins that and they tied it up with consecutive goals of their own. Mike Rooney got the first at 6:48 from Matt Marrazzo; and Massoth got the second at 5:11 from DeYoung and defenseman Mike Harrington. Fitts scored again for the Leafs at 4:52 from Todd Nalette and Joe Hayes. However, Nalette went for a hook at 4:07 and the B's PP answered at 3:47 with Chris Mudge's goal assisted by Marrazzo. The first period ended a 3-3 tie, but the goals did not end there.

The second period was again evenly matched on the scoreboard, and this time the B' started quick at 14:28 on Steve Geiger's goal fed by another first assist from Marrazzo. The Leafs had a bad line change and were guilty of Too Many Men on the ice at 11:54. It didn't take long for the B's to go up by two, and by this time the reinforcements had arrived. The Bruins bench was filling up with latecomers, and better late than never Scott Bishop got the PPG at 11:42 from Don Powers. The Bruins then had their own line change snafu and got sent for Too Many Men at 10:39, and to even up the bloopers Racicot scored an unassisted PPG for the Leafs to make it 5-4 and cut their deficit back to one goal. Fitts tied the game at 5 aside from Johnson at 6:05, and then the Leafs re-gained the lead on John Thomas' goal assisted by Dave Bouthillier at 5:14. Fitts was being called for a delayed slashing minor when Massoth got his second of the game for the B's, unassisted to boot, to nullify the Leaf delayed minor at 4:42. Marrazzo made it a 4-point night with a goal at 2:18 from Dave DeSchamp to put the B's up once again. To noone's surprise, the period ended in a tie on Thomas' second of the period at 0:17 from Racicot who completed a 3-point night.

It was 7-7 to start the third, and there were far too many goals scored already. Where was the defense? The solid goaltending? Ummmm...ahhhh...next question please, no comment. Well, by this time the Bruins had their entire line up on the bench, and it was the late, late comer that made the difference in this game. Scott Fraser, half of the stalwart defensive pair on the B's alongside Mike Harrington, made his way up into the forward ranks after being (I believe) the last Bruin to arrive. Fraser buried one at 9:08 to put the B's up 8-7 from DeYoung and Dan Clabough, and then Fraser set up Geiger who fed it to Rooney for the goal at 6:45 for the two goal lead. This wouldn't have been a scorefest if the Leafs did not then tie it up at 9 apiece, and they did just that with goals at 5:37 by Hayes unassisted, and then a PPG by Nalette from Fitts at 3:34 while Hadley was in the B's box for slashing. The game seemed destined to go to a shootout, but nobody told Fraser that he couldn't get the GWG while on forward, and he did just that with only 2:10 to go from Clabough!
