Bruins-Avs Record 42 attempt Shootout FINALLY ends w. Avs win.

This regulation scorefest went to a record OT 42-attempt shootout that could easily be a USA Hockey milestone (I'll e-mail them on Tuesday to find out, eh). After a 7-7 affair after 45-minutes of back-and-forth play, the teams started an incredible, pathetic display of men's league hockey that was both beautiful and ugly all at the same time (sort of like beer goggling and then waking up in the morning...you know what I mean even though you don't want to admit it, you dirty buggers!). A penalty was the first entry on the scoresheet a mere 10 seconds into the game at 14:50 on a trip by the Avs Hank Bouchard. However, the Avs struck first on Travis Coe's marker at 9:51 from Chris Johnson. At 8:33 B's F Don Powers went to the box for hooking and the Avs got an "unassisted" goal on the PP by, guess who, Dr. McSelfish, Nick Bayley (you really ARE a selfish bastard!). Actually, I don't believe this scoring play - how many unassisted PPG's have you ever seen? Bayley must have been so fast that it must have looked like he got the first and second assist to himself on a trademark lightning fast goal, right refs? With Marrazzo in the box for bodychecking at 7:12 the B's killed off the penalty, and answered the Avs PPG with one of their own with Fallon in the Avs box for tripping. Mike Rooney solved Bartline at 5:30 on the PP off feeds from Scott Fraser and Jay Smith to make it 2-1 Avs. Coe put his team up 3-1 at the end of the first with his goal at 0:34 from linemate Johnson, their second combo for a goal in the period by this dynamic Rutland duo. The Bruins started the second period on fire, and showed signs of chemistry on offense for the first time this season with their new lineup. At 14:21 Dan Clabough scored from Dave DeSchamp, who broke his pointless streak with his first assist, and from linemate Don Powers. Scott Fraser tied it 3-3 at 13:34 from Rooney and Derek DeYoung. Bayley put the Avs back on top with yet another selfish unassisted goal at 10:58! Rooney went to the B's box at 9:45 for tripping and then Avs D Dan Charette evened things up at 4 skaters per side with his penalty on the PP for hooking at 9:04, but no goals were scored. Coe got a hooking minor at 13:28 of the third, and then Mike Hickey went at 12:06 for holding to give the B's a 5-on-3 PP. However, heroic Sean McCabe got a shorty at 10:43 to make it 5-3 Avs. DeYoung cut the lead back to one with his goal at 9:28 from Powers and Fraser, and then Big Daddy Shrek Alec Jessiman scored a trademark unassisted goal (that I actually believe happened) charging in for the marker at 8:25 to make it a 5-5 tie with half a period left to play! What excitement! Johnson beat Hadley, who didn't like it one bit as the two continued their back-and-forth bickering, at 7:37 from Bouchard, and then the B's answered right back at 6:26 on Steve Geiger's goal from Rooney and DeYoung. Kevin Calder got the LVP award of the game for a crosschecking major at 4:45 after forcing Tony DeFelice into the boards head and shoulder first from behind, but luckily DeFelice was not hurt on the dirty play. Calder admitted to losing it after being harassed by DeFelice (who had zero penalties in the game by the way). Calder sat in the box for the rest of the game and was ineligible for the OT shootout. Avs Superman Sean McCabe scored a shorty with Calder in the sin bin with only 1:03 to go assisted by Bouchard, and it seemed that the game was over. But is was not so! Rooney scored the GTG on the PP with a mere 39 seconds left from Clabough and D-man Mike harrington to force a shootout!
