Leafs surprise Bruins in OT thriller!

The Bruins made some early season roster additions which seemed to bolster their offense. Although there were scoring chances on both ends, the Bruins new-found speed gave them the majority of scoring chances. With the B’s pressing and mainly on the attack surrendered three odd-man rushes. On each scoring chance Bruin goalie Greg Hadley was up to the task. He made two stellar glove saves and one sprawling across-the-crease stopper. Leaf netminder Ken Lallier was no less brilliant. The periods only goal came when Matt Marrazzo hit streaking defensemen Alec Jessiman who skated in on Lallier. Jessiman centered the puck to Rawley Massoth, who scored his first UVHL goal with only 4:49 remaining in the first period. The period ended with the Bruins leading 1-0. The Bruins continued to pressure the Leafs until Michael Rooney scored from Derek Deyoung and Jessiman less than a minute into the second stanza. Tony DeFelice scored on a nifty backhand over a sprawled Lallier to make it 3-0 (from Marrazzo and Harrington). The Bruins had carried the play and Hadley was thus far perfect which convinced this author that the Bruins would dominate and win their first game of the season. No one told the Leafs that the game was over and maybe the Bruins became over-confident. The Leafs began to chip away at Hadley’s Bruins. The first crack in the armor came as Kirt Johnson head-manned a pass to Todd Nalette who go the Leafs on the board with 2:09 remaining in the second. After the short intermission the teams traditionally switched ends and the ice began to tilt towards Bruin goaltender Greg Hadley. Although Marrazzo ripped one home early in the third, the Leafs scored one goal after another until they knotted the score at 4-4. Unfortunately I missed a good portion of “the comeback”, as I was dressing for our game against the Avalanche. The Leafs came back from a 4-1 deficit to force overtime and a shootout. John Thomas was the first to shoot for the visiting Leafs and he buried his mark. Lallier and Hadley both shut the door through the remainder of the shootout. Thomas’ goal the game winner was much celebrated at the after-party at Off-the-Green!
