#2 Smoke Eaters vs. #3 Nordiques Semi-Final - 4/29/06.

Oops! I honestly thought the Nords were #2 until I looked at the standings (that were done WAY late mind you no thanks to Mr. Lazy Ass Park) that revealed that the Smoke Eaters finished with a 5-4-0 record and the Nords had a 4-4-1 record giving the Eaters the 1 point edge. My bad, because I put the Nords in the home team locker room, so I'll pay my fine next year Jay - 12 Miller Lite coming your way, eh. It wouldn't have mattered because the SE team showed up with just over half a squad and could have gotten ready in the ladies room instead. Only 9 skaters, no Coakley or Sinclair, no Hughes, and Frenchy on the sidelines with a knee injury. Apparently Sinc hung 'em up, so we must pay tribute to the first ever UVHL leading scorer, Ryan Sinclair. We'll miss you, eh! You'll be on the first ballot for the UVHL Hall of Fame in 2009. The Smoke Eaters made it very clear that they wouldn't be showing up for the 3rd Place game if they lost in this Semi-Final, so the Nords made damn sure of it and absolutely shellaqued the light squad even without Kelly Park in their line-up. Park had to go help his parents open their summer place and "had committed to it over a year ago". Way to bail on your teammates in the frickin' playoffs, Park! Now Homey's hissy fit doesn't look so bad there, does it? In any case, it was too bad because the Smoke Eaters that did show up really wanted to play and compete, and they did, but their teammates bailed on them as well . No excuses though, because there was a playoff game to be played, and the Nords wanted it more than the Smoke Eaters. The first period was very competitive and there was back and forth action and no scoring until Nords swing winger Al Sorrentino and defenseman Doug Troy set up Dan Ammel for a goal at 3:20 past BJ Premore who was standing on his head already. However, JT played his absolute best game of the frickin' YEAR in this one and my own daughter, 9-year old Colleen, said in the stands that JT was "a wall" in the Nords net. Late in the first Doug Troy went to the box for holding at 0:41, but JT ensured that his team went into the second with a 1-goal lead. The Smoke Eaters killed off a penalty to Andy Weber for hooking at 11:38 of the second. Halfway through the period the Nords got their second goal on Marcus Ericsson's marker at 7:18 from Tom Dakai, but not before both goalies made more acrobatic saves at both ends. Before they got tired later in the game, the Smoke Eaters that did show up really showed up, and they played competitive inspired hockey like is expected in the playoffs. However, JT was en fuego, and the Nords' 4-man D unit of Tom Dakai, Drew Crapser, Doug Troy and Shawn McDermott was stalwart. Late in the period both Troy and Dakai were in the box, Troy for hooking at 1:37 and Dakai at 0:19 for interference, and JT, Crapser and McD kept the Smoke Eaters at bay to enter the third with a 2-0 lead. Not to diminish the hard work of the Nords forwards, mind you, because Dan Ammel led the way by example with Marcus Ericsson and Matt Authier working hard and being tough in the corners, along the half-boards, and backchecking causing turnovers and creating chances. JT even added an assist with an outlet pass to Sorrentino who found Ammel for a goal at 11:50! Mike O'Neil also had a strong game, and even filled in on D when needed, and he scored his first at 11:25 assisted by Ericsson and McDermott to keep the momentum with the Nords in the third to put it out of reach. Matt Authier scored a trademark unassisted goal at 7:07 after pursuing the puck in the offensive zone, getting the turnover and converting to make it 5-0. Ammel earned his third point of the game setting up O'Neil for his second goal at 3:22 to end the scoring and any doubt that the Nords didn't all have their A-games today.
