Leafs advance to 3rd Place game defeating Avs 6-5

Well, this was a weird one to say the least. Avs goalie Jim Beraldi had to cancel on short notice for the Consolation game and no other goalies were available after JT had to go home and tend to a sick child, so the Leafs and Avs made the best of it in a 45-minute scrimmage. Both teams were light and the Avs had only 7 skaters and the Leafs 8 for this contest. The teams changed ends halfway through, and were forced to shoot on the unique goalmouth shape of twin peaks and a valley that stoned player after player and gave Kenny Lallier a run for his money in the goals against average contest for this game! A net designed for pick-up hockey was pulled out of the back of the rink and replaced Beraldi at the Avs end, and the net was shaped like this: red iron bar across the ice to prevent goals along the ice, twin peaks at either end to represent the high and low glove and blocker sides along the edges of the posts, and a raised center for the 5-hole, all meshed in from behind like a regular net - and it was tough! Shot after shot rang off the funny shaped posts, and many went in behind the net after flying through the open center, and the players were left shaking their heads. In the first 22.5 minutes the Leafs scored two goals on the funny net to the Avs two on Lallier to send it to the second half tied! The Avs started off the scoring at 40:10 on a Swedish Olympic Golden Goal by our resident Swede Marcus Ericsson from linemate Aaron Guyette. The Leafs Doug Heavisides stopped feeling guilty and scored on the shooter tutor net at 36:59 from Dave Fitts. Heavisides scored again at 35:26 from Dave Riley. Aaron Guyette got one past Kenny at 26:27 from Marcus Ericsson and Fred McNutt to end the first half scoring at 2-2. The teams switched ends and the Leafs went against their own regular goalie and showed no mercy! Heavisides scored again at 18:56 from Jason Loomis and Chris Gogan. Then Gogan scored at 15:21 from Kyle Manny, and heavisides again at 14:09 unassisted to make it 5-2 for the Leafs who were defending the iron goalie well. The Avs came alive and it was Ericsson again at 12:52 from Guyette to cut the lead to two. Avs D Ed Sheehan sent a bouncer into the 5-hole after the Avs rang a few off the parabolic posts at 8:55 from Ericsson and Kevin Calder. The score was 5-4 in favor of the Leafs, and Lallier shut down the remainder of his usual teammates chances, and the iron wall at the other end denied many other Avs shots over the next 7 and a half minutes of play. Leaf captain Sean Casavant saw his shot deflect off an Avs defender's stick past Lallier with only 1:35 to go to seal the deal from Fitts and Gogan. In the final seconds and the Avs last ditch attempt to tie the game Ericsson scored his third from McNutt and Caleb Hawley with 14 seconds left, but time ran out.
