LEAFS WIN! LEAFS WIN! 6-4 over Avs, Leafs win!

The rebuilding UVHL Leafs have FINALLY gotten their first elusive victory! Going into the game with an 0-9-2 record at the bottom of the UVHL's standings through 11 weeks of frustration, the Leafs have officially started to gel and goaltender Ken Lallier turned in his best performance this season leading his team to victory taking a page out of opposing goaltender Jim Beraldi's book by standing on his frickin' head and being the best player on the ice. This author must apologise as I no longer have the time to devote my full attention to this write-up as Cristmas Eve is almost upon us, but I shall do my best to give it as much justice as I can. The Leafs did catch a break as the Avs were without super Euro sniper and floater Marcus Ericson and his partner in crime part-time center and elite UVHL defenseman Jami James for this match-up. The Leafs welcomed back Eliot Byrd from college for a four game stint. Byrd, one of the only offesive threats from last years brutal Blackhawks, was thrilled to be back in a UVHL uniform, if only for a short perioid of time. However, the Avs scored first only 1:14 into the game on a goal from Aaron Guyette proving he doesn't need linemates James or Ericson to score putting one past Lallier from Chris Johnson. Byrd went to work for the Leafs late in the first scoring his first UVHL goal of the season with 2:54 left in the period from Fred Redden to leave the first tied at 1 aside. The Leafs carried the momentum into the second scoring at 14:02 on a now maskless again Dave Fitts goal from speedy linemate Justin Wing. Chippy Greg Bishop received a slashing minor at 13:10 for the Avs, and Bishop had better learn to keep is frickin' stick to himself in the UVHL or someone might take extreme exception to his lumber loving style of play and take his head off in retaliation. On the PP it was Todd Nalette putting the Leafs up 3-1 at 12:05 from Jason Loomis and D Kirt Johnson. The Leafs continued to roll when Wing added a goal to his assist at 7:25 from linemates Fitts and Byrd, whose immediate chemistry and combination at forward generated many chances for the leafs, who needed a second scoring unit, and all this without Doug Heavisides in the line-up for the Leafs tonight! The Avs got another goal from Guyette at 9:43 of the third from linemates Bishop and Johnson to make it 4-2. Johnson, who had been wasted on D the last several games, was able to show his hustle, creativeness and speed up front for the Avs, and worked well with Guyette making food for thought about new line combinations for the Avs on James and Ericson's return. Johnson set up Avs Captain Sean McCabe only 26 seconds later to cut the Leafs lead to a mere goal at 9:17. Were the Leafs on the verge of falling apart like their Season 2 predecessors the Blackhawks? NO! Johnson took a tripping penalty (what? you couldn't catch him?) at 9:10 to squelch the momentum of the surging Avalanche that resulted in the eventual game winner at 7:56 by the Leafs Fred Redden, assisted by Kirt Johnson with his second assist of the night. Fed up from being manhandled, slashed and held, most sportsmanlike candidate Avs captain McCabe lashed out in a rare display of frustration and took a double minor for roughing and unsportsmanlike at 4:45 of the third after a scrum with Ian Stevens of the Leafs along the boards. McCabe had a few choice words for the refs and the commish, and dedervedly so, as McCabe gets fouled all game with no calls due to his speed, vision and super skills, but he did deserve the penalties, but should get a frickin' break because he is one of the good guys. Doesn't the UVHL want to protect its stars? However, as he has done in several games past, Johnson scored another late third period goal assisted by smooth D Ed Sheehan to bring his team closer to tieing the game with a shorthanded marker to make it 5-4 with only 1:19 to go! The Leafs could have been on the verge of unravelling, but this team is now stronger and more cohesive than only a few games ago, and they fended off the attack of the Avs, and forced a last minute penalty to Avs D Kevin Calder at 1:07 and then scored on the PP when Kyle Manny sealed the victory at 0:43 from Nalette and playmaker D Johnson thereby exorcising the Leafs' demons and earning them their first Seson 3 victory!
