Just thinking...

Mar 19th, 2013 02:01 PM
Shouldn’t Tuck and Cardigan each get one win over the past two weeks? Which would put the Nords in fourth place with no shot at securing third and having to face the Whale in the first round of the playoffs.

I am guessing, the commissioners (who happen to be all on the Nords) got together and came up with this idea so they wouldn’t get knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, yet again.

Cheers.

Z, you shouldn't think...it's not your strong suit and you may hurt yourself. Honestly, if I had kept the games the way they were, both Cardigan & Tuck would have losses / forfeits in the last two weeks anyways, so by moving them to face each other and allowing the other teams to have actual games it was a win / win for everyone.

In all reality, it doesn't really matter, everyone makes the playoffs and I have a feeling that you would rather face Cardigan than the Nordiques and that is why you're making the stink.

I'd love to knock the reigning champs out of the playoffs in the first round.

Same Question

I was actually curious about this as well, because Cardigan was scored with 25 points after last week and now only has 23, so there was an adjustment. I personally don't care either way, and I know that Kenny thought it odd that the teams got a point despite not showing up. So, while I hate to speak for him, I would think our team captain would favor the adjustment.

In the case of the Whale, we're fifth place regardless. I'd prefer to play the Nords and skip Carpino in the first round, but both the teams would provide strong challenges, and we'd have to play well to beat either. The issue that doesn't affect the Whale is that the third-place team gets a far easier game against Dead River.

As I've said, I don't care either way on the rule, but considering Tuck and Cardigan had each been carrying a point for a forfeit tie since late Decemeber, the final week adjustment was unexpected, even while being fair.

Forfeit = 0 points

My take is that if a team has to forfeit due to the fact that they can not roster a team, why would they get to earn a point? They have forfeited. Cardigan & Tuck both knew that they would be forfeiting games while they were away, I just matched these teams up in order to make sure that we had 2 games last week & this week and guys were getting their moneys worth.

Your reasoning makes sense: a team should have to show up to be eligible for a point.

The only confusion I had was that they were credited with the points in the standings, and then they taken away this week. It was always weird though, because the extra points were accrued from a mysterious column that wasn't even one of the three in the standings, so I agree that based on their listed record in games played, the teams have the correct amount of points.

One question for after tonight: do points or winning percentage take precedence? Cardigan has a 0.61% with 23 points. With a win tonight, the Nords will have 24 points but a 0.55%. I suppose if Cardigan's three forfeits were scored as Losses, they'd be 11-10-1, not 11-7-1, so that would leave them at 0.52%.

Wins vs Winning %

We've always gone by points. I put in winning % a couple years ago when Tuck joined because someone requested it.

As for the added point that Cardigan & Tuck had, I had initially added Ties in there as an option for how a game could end but ties are just messy and don't make sense when people forfeit due to a lack of players. For example, earlier this season the Nordiques had to forfeit a game against Cardigan because we couldn't find a goalie. Same situation, where we could have just made it a tie for both teams or make it so the game didn't register, but since Cardigan could field a full team and the Nordiques couldn't, the win went to Cardigan.

If we were to really delve into this, we could say that the Nords & Dead River automatically get 2 points this week because our opponents(Tuck & Cardigan) couldn't field teams. Same thing goes with last week where Dead River & the Whalers could have both earned automatic wins but ended up playing each other.

It's all a shit show.

Silly business school kids with their percentages...

Sounds good to me. We all make the playoffs, and I agree that consolidating to two games the past two weeks was definitely a better choice than having two ready-to-play teams sit at home and earn forfeit wins against out-of-town opponents.

2nd rd??

I'm hoping the Whale make the 2nd rd against us. And I also hope JZ keeps his distance from our net. Crashing into JT, the occasional stick to his head, back of the leg, "going hard to the net " " playing close to the edge" all characteristics of this guy's game. It pisses people off, but is likely effective. If I didn't think a lot of Kenny, and respected him as a person and as a player, is likely do a few of those things too. So, I guess we'll see which JZ shows up to play that night.

I'm touched you noticed Marshy.. And I guess your implying I have little to no respect for Turner..? Quite the opposite and I feel like the philosophical readings of the underwood have really been helping me find my calm place. I too hope the Whale make it past Cardigan and on to play Dead River.

Implying DR is going to somehow win on Tues, only means one thing. You're breathing in more than zen readings. I guess after thinking about your response, I know players can be edgy on the ice, and a totally different guy off the ice. You likely fit that description, and I never intended that you had no respect for JT, I was bringing to light your love taps on JT. That's all it is, love for the game.

Playoff Seed Clarification

Hey Guys,

I hate to rain on this whole second round smack talk that's going on, but just for clarification, the only way the Whalers play the Nordiques (or Dead River) in the playoffs would be if both advanced all the way to the championship.

The two teams that win their first round games will play the two bye teams in the second round. There's no way around that.

Thanks,
Stally
