You may prefer the blonde, you may prefer the brunette. No matter which suits your fancy today, you must agree that both of them are HOT! The Whalers and Dead River Oilers are playing their best hockey in franchise histories, and as is often true, the teams playing at the top of their game in April have playoff success. That is why these two squads meet intheir first Whalen Cup Finals EVER!
The Whalers are the Cinderella story of the 2010-11 season. Finishing in last place with a 4-16-3 regular season, the Great Whale went on a lste season tear dismantling the Nordiques late in the regular schedule, destroying the Nords in the quarterfinals, and then forged arguably the biggest upset in the history of the UVHL a semi-final win over the first place 22-1 Gamblers. This team came together with legit late season additions of Cody Vose and AJ Hamel to compliment Jason Gramling for a high octane offense "Young Guns" combo, a wise switch of Jay Zaneloni to defense, and a veteran goaltender playing inspired and possibly the best hockey of his UVHL career. Make no mistake, the Whalers are legit, and their first ever playoff win in 7 previous seasons against the Nords propelled them to upset the Gamblers and they now play for their first Whalen Cup amidst a controversy of secret pre-game "rituals" (see last week's write-up for more!).
The Dead River Oilers had a dismal season last year as their first in existence. A refurbished crew of former veteran Storm Kings, UVHL castaways, and a new player or two under former goaltender and man-whore Greg Hadley's tutelage just didn't have the horses or goaltending last season to make any noise or have a whole lot of fun. Things were different this year. The Oilers have Greg "First Period" Feiden between the pipes, and he lends solid, and sometimes spectacular goaltending to a squad that compliments each other well and has learned how tolay their brand of hockey. Led by skilled and tenacious players Rob Pattison and Evan Duggan, complimented by Ricky Golden and Dean Cashman, and held together on the blueline by Rick Hughes, Chris Warrington, and this season's best surprise: the smooth skating Alexandra Zagaria - the blueline equivalent of Allison Malcolm (the league's best positional forward). Yes, that is right. I said it. Ally is the best positional blueliner in the league, and that is saying a LOT considering Ryan McGovern has patrolled the Tuck blueline for the past 4 seasons. Dead River can win this thing, too, and you cannot count them out. Pattison can make everyone else around him better, can win the game single-handed, and if DR stays disciplined, their experience may be the difference.
So, who will win? Cinderella, or Snow White? Who cares? I just wanna see them both go at it! (that way everybody wins!) I'm staying neutral and we'll let the trash talk and player voting determine what the current word on the street is. Good luck to both teams, may you all have your A-games, and may the best team win!

This has officially turned into "Bizarro UVHL". I'm rooting for the Whale, only because it will make me feel better about our horrific loss to them if they win the whole thing.

We are NOTHING without you, Jordy! We can't even beat the Whalers. Now they're the Cinderella Story of the entire season, maybe even the history of the UVHL, and its ALL YOUR FAULT! Will you grace us with your presence for the 5th Place game tomorrow night?

Yes, I have heard McGee is jumping ship to the Whale for the 11-12 season .. He is sick of all the "girly fighting" going on between a boy named Kelly and an odd duck named Turner.

Z, I heard the Whalers have demoted you to defense already this season and have contemplated either trading you to the "B" league for a used blowup doll, or making you Kenny's personal shower luffa.
Either way, you suck, and we locked up Jordy McGee to a long 15 year deal.

Yes, Whale Corporate (Nicky Hall, Gary "the Pearl" any Kenny) sent me back to D b/c they were sick of watching me in search of A) hockey sense and B) those pretty butterflies in the rafters of Union Arena.

I am not sure I would even make the cut playing D in mud league .. You shoud try "Four Loco" .. Works for the Whale, a special thanks to Mark Gattie.

Above average banter going on here, Boys! I love it! Z - I didn't know you liked butterflies, too. My personal favorite is the Upper Valley's own "black flutterpuck" that is often seen coming off Park's stick inching its way towards the goal, wide of course, at an incredibly low speed. It is an incredibly strange species as all of them are female.

Hence the name Kelly .. never would have put those two together.
The "black flutter puck" is nice .. However, have you seen the "orange & red piss-fuck"?

No, I have not had the pleasure of witnessing the "orange & red piss-fuck". Please describe. Is it another local butterfly?

I believe that these are two separate species of butterflies. If you were at the Semi's last week you definitely saw the Orange Piss-Fuck... There were approximately 12 of them that came out between 8 and 9:30. If you come tonight you should be able to spot the Red ones....

I was describing the color of JT & Park's faces when they have lost to the Whale 2x in a 3 weeks span and the comments of pissing & moaning on each other.
